    HERMS noob questions

You are asking a lot of that little pump. I'd get that valve installed ASAP.

    HERMS noob questions

I typically keep my PID for the HLT one degree above target temp for the mash, but your setup may require more. I'd start with 2 degrees and tweak from there.

    Always rinse your rice hulls!

Soak some rice hulls in a glass and then remove the hulls and take a sip. If it tastes bad...

Explaining the brewing process in under 3 minutes

The really short version: You take grains, like barley, and you grind them up into bits and dump them into some very hot water. The enzymes present in the grains will take the starches inside the grains and convert them into sugars. The process of turning the starches of the grains into sugars...

    Keezer Bar Help/ Advice.

My concern would be the joint between the backsplash and the countertop. That joint is not designed to withstand the jiggling around of a lid. You would be wise to try and beef up that joint. You could find sturdier hinges to replace the factory hinge. They just wouldn't be spring loaded...

I don't want to open a brewery (and maybe you shouldn't either)

Find a local brewery and ask them if you and your friends can come over during a brew day and clean out their mash tun for them. That should shut your friends up pretty quick about wanting to open up a brewery.

    2016 Dark Lord Day

There's a store in Tinley Park, IL that I usually go to for buying local beers that you may not be able to find anywhere else but their taproom. It's 25 minutes away from 3 Floyd's. The Open Bottle 7101 W. 183rd Street - Unit 105 Tinley Park, IL 60477 And there's a few taprooms in...

What can I do with a Plastic PubKeg ?

First of all, I should mention that I am very much biased against sanke kegs and sanke equipment. Compared to the corny kegs, sanke tap kegs are a huge pain in the butt. The sanke taps are really expensive (around $40) compared to the corny keg taps (around $12), the kegs are harder to clean...

    Jockey Box Cold Plate Leak

Uh...well...yeah, probably. Give us some pics of the thing with the liquid out post removed. I'd really try to fix it with new o-rings or maybe teflon tape before resorting to solder if that's possible.

    2016 Dark Lord Day

I've seen plenty of tents that have no sides, but I don't recall seeing any tents that were designed for sleeping overnight in.

Actually... The vanilla bean is extremely good if you can manage to get your hands on it. The normal stuff...eh. It used to be a really great beer back when few others were making stuff like it, but now the field has gotten very crowded and many other breweries have surpassed them. In my...

Gonna have a baby, is my life over

Well, to be fair, it is a pretty inane question that's been asked a million times. The question you need to answer is, "what type of dad are you going to be?" A really crappy dad that values his own hobbies and desires over that of his family? Your life won't change that much, other than...

    Lazy brewers mash temperature control

Yeah, I would not trust something like that. I don't see a temp probe on that thing, which means that it's just outputting a certain amount of electricity to the heating element. You're going to have to recirculate the wort in order to prevent a hotspot. It does seem likely that grains would...

    Struggling.

Invest in a 10ml graduated cylinder. You're not going to get anywhere with teaspoons.

    Struggling.

I usually get very good mash efficiency results with 1 quart per minute. My rate of sparging greatly affects my efficiency, so I try hard to keep this rate stable. It's not easy with ball valves, since even the slightest nudge on the valves when you're using a pump affects the flow a good...

Finally a good measure of boil off - normal?

Water shrinks about 4% when it goes from near-boiling to room temperature, so if you read the first measurement at room temperature and didn't cool the wort before taking the second reading then you probably lost closer to 3/4 of a gallon instead of just a half gallon.
