Saison How Rye I Am (Rye Saison) - 2011 - 1st Place Best of Show - HBT Comp

I brewed 5 gallons of this and hit OG of 1.056 without the sugar. I let it ferment out until the krausen fell and then added 0.75lb of turbinado dissolved in a few cups of water. I let it sit for a total of 2.5 weeks and my FG is 1.002.. that yeast is a beast. Flat hydrometer sample tasted...

Imperial Stout Russian Imperial Stout (2011 HBT Competition Category Winner)

I pulled a sample last night to check the gravity. It is at 1.020 down from 1.080. I'm hoping it squeaks out a few more points, but even if it is done I can't wait to get this one kegged. This is the first beer where I sipped and enjoyed the warm, flat gravity sample like it was a finished...

Imperial Stout Russian Imperial Stout (2011 HBT Competition Category Winner)

I brewed this two weeks ago. My efficiency was terrible, only getting about 1.080 in 5.25 gallons. I'm hoping it attenuates pretty well because anything that finishes above 1.020 is generally too sweet for me. I added a little over 2oz of medium toast American oak cubes soaked in 50ml of...

    CP's Brew Workbook

This thing is amazing. I've been using it since v 2.0 for all my brews. Keep up the good work. The only recommendation I have is to carry over more info from the main tab into the brewday. For example, the hop schedule shouldn't be different so it would be useful to just carry that...

Won 3 Medals at CA State Fair!!!

I entered beer and haven't heard anything. I was at the fair on Sunday and the exhibit wasn't up and I couldn't find a single person at any of the information booths that knew a thing about the competition. Where did you find the info?

    4 pack rant

jdlev is spot on. Look at the soda 8 packs that are deceptively packaged to look like 12 packs. You see them at $3 and think that's a decent deal for a 12 pack of soda... bastards.

    Sacramento Brews?

Sacramento/Roseville folks, I've been following a new brewery that's going to open up this Summer with a tasting room called "Roseville Brewing Company." Their brewhouse is off near Washington & Pleasant Grove (conveniently about 2 miles from my house) and they're aiming for a small, low-key...

    keg connection.com

I bought a two keg kit with a taprite regulator, 5lb co2 tank and two used corny kegs. The kegs arrived a couple weeks after ordering dirty inside/out and smelling of soda so their claim to clean the kegs before shipping is false. I soaked both of them in oxiclean and replaced the orings with...

Brew Pal software in the iTunes App Store

All he needs to do is release it under a new version year. BrewPal 2011 and charge another $2 for it. I would pay for it again if he made substantial improvements. If it is just a bug fix release then I'm not paying another cent for it.

    My new pot :(

I think a discount is fair. If you purchased a slightly blemished item in store they would knock the price down a bit and this is no different. That is a pricey pot at roughly $150 so 20% is $30 off, definitely cheaper than shipping it back and forth after you calculate the cost of handling.

Called my wife a Swmbo... She was mad

In my world acronyms are supposed to be a faster way to say a long phrase. This is like the reverse of that. SWMBO bugs me... I guess it's the efficiency nut in me. It seems a more suitable acronym is SWMBKH... She Who Must be Kept Happy. Again, wife is a lot easier to say.

Oak Cubes - I should have searched HBT first!

So the update is this is a complex beer with a lot going on. The oak is lost with the massive amount of hops. When I brew it again I will put it on cubes for a month or so.

2 Mugs up if you love Ranger (IPA)

I like how they decided to make it dry. A lot of extra IPAs are in the middle of the FG range. My go to is Torpedo, but I really enjoy a Ranger when I'm looking for a clean, crisp IPA.

MUST stops for beer near Sacramento?

What's up fellow Sacramentans. Thanks for the tip on Owl in Roseville. I also highly recommend both Rubicon (Glynn the owner is a great guy) and Pangaea. They are only about 15-20 mins apart and offer a great selection of west coast craft beer. This thread makes me think we need a Sacramento...

Big breweries using small names to conceal themselves?

It's a sad state of affairs when the government has to step in and punish the corporation because a government regulatory agency failed to do its job.

Big breweries using small names to conceal themselves?

I have to throw some support for Gila's thinking here. In the words of many famous entrepreneurs, "Don't hate the player, hate the game." In a regulated environment there are rules of the game just like sports. Do you condemn the superstar basketball player for taking three steps when the...
