Does anyone brew during a cold winter?

Hi Guys, Where I am we are going through some very cold weather (it was -3c this morning) and the house is quite cold. I just measured the temp of my latest all grain and it's at 17c. This is too cold for a good fermentation? Should I invest in some way of keeping the liquid warm? My...

    Still bubbling after two weeks

Hi All, I have two batches that, after two weeks, are still bubbling. They are not bubbling often, but there is activity. The OG of one was 1.038 and it is now 1.010 The OG of the other was 1.048 and it is now 1.014 Do you think these are these ready to be bottled? Thanks. Pwn.

    Mash time

Hi, There is something I don't understand about mashing. If I mash for 1 hour, then recirculate, then drain, the liquid is sitting with the grain for much longer than one hour but a lot of the guides etc that I have read say you need to mash for an hour. On Sunday I mashed for one hour...

Cant get one of my latest batches to start

Hi guys, On Sunday I brewed two 40 pint batches - one from a kit and one all grain. The kit is fermenting nicely and there is a 'crust' on top. :D My all grain isn't doing anything! I'm assuming the temperature is okay since the kit beer seems to be fine and I'm also fermenting...

    Question about O.G & S.G

Hi all, I have some questions about gravity and fermentation and would really appreciate any advice. Am I right in saying that there is a simple concept that the larger the difference between the OG and FG the higher the alcohol content? Can you control how low the gravity goes during...

Home made mash tun keeps blocking

Hi everyone, After looking at lots of different ways to do it, I decided to make my own mash tun using a Thermos cooler and a copper manifold with slots cut in to allow for drainage. I had the opportunity to use it for the first time today, but it hasn't gone well at all! I let the...

Have I made a dangerous ginger beer??

Hi Guys, Recently I thought I'd try making some ginger beer. I made a mix using ginger, honey, molasses, lemon juice and sugar and put it all into a 1 gallon demijohn. The gravity before I added the yeast was 1.040. I've been busy lately and not done anything with it for 2 and a half weeks...

    My brew is very sweet

Hi Ive just finished making my 2nd all grain. I just had a little taste before I added the yeast just to see what kind of taste it had and it was very very sweet! Is some of that sweetness likely to disappear once the yeast has done its thing? (I would like to lose some of the sweetness if...

    My first all grain......disaster??

Hi All, I finally made my first all-grain but I'm a little worried that it is turning into a disaster. I transfered it into a pressure barrel today after it has been in two different fermenting bins for the past 2 weeks (I can go into far more detail if needed). I measured the gravity...

Coopers kit has way too much foam

Hi all, (just noticed I have the post title wrong. It should be Muntons, NOT Coopers) I have made three 40 pint batches from kits so far, all three of which have tasted great. However, I cant seem to get them quite right. The batch I'm drinking right now (muntons, conkerwood black ale)...

    Hydrometer will not pass 1020

Hi guys, I've had a brew kit fermenting in the bucket for 14 days and it will not pass 1020 on the hydrometer. It has stuck at 1020 and the kit instructions say it should be below 1014 before transferring it into the pressure barrel. I'm very new to this and not sure what I did wrong. I've...

I think my barrel is leaking

Hi guys, On Thursday I put my first batch of beer into the pressure barrel that came with my kit. All seems well, only occasionally a small drip of beer comes out of the tap even though it is fully closed. Do you think this is anything to worry about? Is the pressure so great that the beer is...

    Airlock Worries

Hi all, First of all, I'm a total newbie when it comes to brewing! I made my first batch on Saturday and it has been bubbling away nicely. My question is regarding the airlock I received with the kit. It looks *exactly* like a 3 peice airlock, but it is only two pieces. The lid has a stem...
