    Yeast washing using Nalgenes

You could just hit them with star San. "Spray the hell out of it with star San" is my normal approach for many other things after all. Does heat bring things closer to sterilized vs sanitized? Not sure if I'm remembering that or making it up :) I always get a touch extra germ paranoid when it...

    Yeast washing using Nalgenes

Ball jars have metal covers, not so good for the microwave :) But if you could find some plastic covers for the glass jars that should work just as well. The material doesn't mater as much as using the microwave as the heat source instead of a big pot of water on the stove. Takes the boiling...

    Yeast washing using Nalgenes

Btw - realize this could look like spam or something. I make absolutely no money from this site and it is not malicious in any way. It's just yet another way (because I needed another one..) for me to obsess about beer. Only reward I get is to share it with other hpmebrewers and hopefully help...

    Yeast washing using Nalgenes

Hey everyone, just did a write up on this on my blog and usually post these here if I think the forum will find them interesting. Long story short, I was sick of boiling mason jars for yeast rinsing and wanted to come up with a faster way. So I came up with a pretty easy technique using...

    Whats your favorite yeast?

WLP007. Have had good results and like the English character and extra maltiness. Used to be WLP001. This question always comes up, lots of other folks will say WLP005.

What's your GO TO yeast for imperial IPA??

WLP007, strong fermenter with a bit of English character. Has become my house strain. Nothing wrong with WLP001 tho for a big IPA.

    Hop pictures! 2nd year hops

If u want to do it, I would say just get some rhizomes and get them in the ground next spring. You'll need to put some time into picking and setting up a spot, and watering at least occasionally, but you could ignore setting up strings and harvesting. Let the plant develop its roots and crawl up...

    Hop pictures! 2nd year hops

Just put up some new pictures of my hop gardens on my site, figured I'd share them here. They're coming in much better this year, a few plants have had cones since June. Pretty stoked. My blog: http://newenglandhomebrew.com/archives/90

Looking to purchase a brewing kettle...suggestions?

+1 for getting a 15 gallon pot. I used to do partial boils too, once I got my keggle I never went back to that even though I thought I would occasionally. Also, never thought I would use the extra space and thought I would always stick with 5 gal batches. Now I brew ten gallon batches fairly...

New Stir Plate, Starter, Foam Control

Hmm... not sure about beernygt but perhaps the foam control is doing more than I realize, haven't made a starter without it in some time. Barely foams up at all.

New Stir Plate, Starter, Foam Control

I really wouldn't sweat it. I've made starters with and without foam control, you add it to mostly control boil over in the flask on the stovetop, not really for when it's on the stir plate. But it helps a bit there too. I think I've had one foam over on the plate. Happened when I was at work...

Cold crash early to preserve sweetness?

When I've made ciders I cold crash and keg. Once in the keg I'll add a can of apple juice concentrate (preferably w/ sulfate) to bring the sweetness and apple flavor back up. This doesn't help you because you want to bottle, but when I do this the cider always seems to continue to creep along...

Water source in southeastern MA – Simpson Spring

hmm... so you're saying even for pale beers i should bump up the calcium? I was thinking i would just need to do this for things like stouts and porters. what do you think about the pH?

Water source in southeastern MA – Simpson Spring

I’ve recently switched to all grain and have been educating myself on water. While weighing my options I ran across a pretty good solution from a local company that really went out of their way to answer my questions so I figured I’d spread the word to some of my fellow brewers. I’m in no way...

    Water Filter Setup

Since you have quite a bit of experience mabrungard (since we've last talked i've checked out your site and have begun using your spreadsheet) here's a question for you: Why dry out the filter? a few years back i was pretty heavily into saltwater reef fish tanks. there are a some similar needs...

    Water Filter Setup

is this accurate? what about a fridge with a built in water filter, isn't this an activated carbon filter that's connected full time? perhaps whirlpool will soon be flooded with lawsuits.
