Getting beer out of a 60gal wine barrel

Soooo, my brew buddy and I got the bright idea of filling up a couple of 60gal wine barrels with beer. It tastes fantastic, but it's now at the point where we need to get them off the oak and we didn't think through the mechanics of how the hell to get beer out of a 580lb (filled) barrel that...

    Cool spots in Louisville, KY?

Any ideas for bars with killer craft beers or worthwhile boubon/wine establishments I should hit up? Arriving in Louisville this Sunday morning and will drive a decent distance for good booze. Also, any good stores to find good east coast beers like Founders, 3 floyds, Bell's, Brooklyn, or...

Strong scotch ale yeast and fermentation questions

Hi all. With things cooling down outside, I decided to take a stab at a strong scotch ale to take advantage of cooler fermentation temps and have a few general questions for those of you who are experienced with this style. As some quick background, I pitched with White Labs WLP028 Edinburgh...

    Bottles not carbonating after 2.5wks

Fellow Brewers, I bottled four 5gal batches with no carbonation problems and then moved to AG and have kegged and force-carbonated 45gal. Then I decided to spread the love and got my sister-in-law a kit of the Koningshoven Quad from AHB and helped her brew and bottle. It was in primary...

Aerate fruit before racking to secondary?

I'm asking my question after the fact, but thought I'd check with all of you to see if my logic is right. I heated up some frozen raspberries (10min @ 160-deg) to add to my stout, let it cool, then dumped it into the secondary carboy before racking. Then I thought, hmmm, the yeast is going...

    Where to measure mill gap?

I'm finallly getting around to adjusting my JSP Maltmill gap setting and am wondering where I should be measuring the gap. It is adjustable on one end of a roller, so it tapers toward the other. If I wanted to set it to 0.032", should I measure at the middle of the rollers? Or at the edge...

How much grain in converted keg MLT?

I have some high-gravity brews lined up with 48lbs of grain for a 10gal batch, but I'm wondering if my 15.5gal keg MLT will be up for the task and whether or not I should scale back to 5gal batches ... What is the most grain you've had in your converted 15.5gal keg MLT?

Cleaning burnt grain in converted SS keg MLT

So I made mistake after mistake during my first attempt at AG brewing last week. One of these mistakes was freaking out when I didn't him my target temp and turning on the the burner under the MLT during the mash. I turned it off after just a couple minutes as I thought about the grain...

    my first AG brew day!

So I purchased some AG equipment a few weeks back and finally got to conducting my first AG brew on Friday 4/17, and ohhhh what an adventure it was!!! Here's a summary of it all ... 1) First, milling the grains took some muscle (see comment below). 2) Then, the drain from the mash stuck...

    Yeast age and pitching questions

I'm anxious to get my first AG batch going (10gal), but have two yeast questions before I get started: 1) Does yeast go bad? How bad? And how does it affect the beer? I had a vial of White Labs Edinburgh Ale that said it was best to use by mid-March '09. I recently bought another with a...

    Infection? Temp too high?

So I brewed Pelikan's DC Raspberry Stout (see recipe database) a while back and it was tasting GREAT for the first 4 weeks. After that, however, there was one hot weekend and I think the room where I do the bottle conditioning got way too hot. I had a single bottle bomb. From that point on...

Just picked up AG equip ... so stoked!

I found a craigslist posting and am now the proud owner of an AG setup. Got the burners, keggle, mash tun, sparge tank, grain mill ... the essentials. Now I just need to find the space to set this bad boy up! I'd have picked up the corny's but I already have 8 on the way from our friend...

bottled first batch of EdWort's apfelwein

Ok, so I just bottled my first batch of EdWort's apfelwein ... rather, a slight variation of. The LHBS was out of Montrachet and dextrose, so I used champagne yeast and dark brown sugar. Two weeks in primary and a month in secondary. Used 5oz of priming sugar for extra fizz ... hope I didn't...

    Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA

Wow, this one kicked my azz! Just tried it at the Flying Saucer in Addison, TX. This is probably the only beer I've had where I'm still not sure whether I like it or not. It was hoppy as hell, but then so sweet that it covered up the bitterness completely ... so much that it was too sweet and...

    first brew - post-Thanksgiving report

Just thought I'd report back on my first brew. I was trying to find a way to serve my first beer at Thanksgiving (Cali Common kit) and got started a bit late: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/primary-vs-conditioning-what-do-under-time-constraint-85818/ So I kept it in primary for 16 days...

    taste of "young" beer?

Thanks to all of you for the help on my other thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/primary-vs-conditioning-what-do-under-time-constraint-85818/ I bottled the Cali Common after 16 days. The final gravity was spot on and it tasted pretty darn good. I popped open a bottle after one week...

Obnoxiously high OG reading. What could have caused it?

I was brewing a Stout kit from MoreBeer! last night and took an OG reading of 1.102 at 25-deg C (roughly 77-deg F). With a temp adjustment, it would be 1.104. The recipe suggests an OG of 1.057. Now I have read quite a bit on HBT on OG readings that are off by .010's, .020's and felt that I...
