    Freezing yeast glycerin question

Doing my yeast bank. Have successfully frozen and reused my yeast a few times now so happy with my process. Have been putting my glycerin in a mason jar and doing 20 minutes at 15psi with my water. It's USP glycerin. This isn't necessary is it?

Water deaeration / High Gravity Brewing

I'm making my first attempt at doing some high gravity brewing. I made a double batch of my pale ale and threw it into the fermenter at an OG of 1.101 and 80 IBUs. Though mechanically my hop spider was too full so I need to.change the hopping process as I guarantee my utilization was much lower...

Faulty Brewer / Foam out of tap on 12 PSI

I appear to really suck at pouring my pale ale an i'm not sure why. I had to shift things around about a week ago in side the kegerator and after a hard knock i was getting foam. This did not really surpirse me all that much. What is killing me is that a week later sitting next to my double IPA...

Checking final runnings for ph and gravity on a grain father.

Brewing on a grain father and it doesn't really seem there is a way to check ph and gravity of the final runnings since the mashtun sits directly on the kettle. I'm thinking once it's done draining the mash, I will have to relocate it onto something with a spigot. Any thoughts?

    1.5" Tried Clamp Size

I use the SS brew tech 7 gal Chronical BME. It's got 1.5" trip clamps on the rack and dump port. I'm finding that length of the Bolt for the nut is not long enough or just barely long enough to actually lock the clamp in place. Otherwise the nut comes off. Really bloody annoying. Anyone else...

    Freezing BRETTANOMYCES

Hey everyone. I've just started my yeast bank and have had a successful brew from a frozen sample (though yet to keg, so we will see how flavor is impacted if I did it right) My local shop is doing a pre order including some Brett. Was wondering if I should pick up a pack. I'm assuming I can...

Malt Muncher 3 Roller Mill issues

Does anyone have the Malt Muncher 3 Roller Mill? I picked one up, and its great, efficiency through the roof. But i can't gap it larger than .048 and it says it goes up to .063. I Was looking to readjust the crust to 0.050 as i'm not getting proper flow and lautering on my grain father. Wort...

    Blichmann BeerGun V2 Cleaning

Wondering how other people with this clean it after using it. I've just used mine for the first time and it makes sense to me that you really only need to remove the 2 tubes and rubber stopper for a 1 hr hot pbw soak. Does anyone clean or sanitize the handle? It shouldn't have had any beer...

    Yeast Dump Health

Did my first yeast Harveat from my conical. I did a couple trub dumps first and pull this after a 2 day cold crash. This is just straight yeast under the beer isn't it? I'm assuming I can pretty much just decant this and repitch it right? It won't get used probably for month, so when I do use...

    Using BRETTANOMYCES and cleaning

I'd like to start playing with Bret. I'm worried it's gonna get into everything. Am I being overly paranoid?

Efficiency redonculously high - had to water down

So i just made an amber ale with a 4.96kg grainbill to a batch size of 21 litres (plus kettle loss) and some how got 86% efficiency measured. I'm watered it down to get calculated final gravity from 1.060 down to the 1.052 I'm looking for. I'm assuming watering it down in the kettle is going to...

Milling grain a month in advance

Wondering if anyone has found issues with milling grain in advance. I'm gonna have a yeast ranch going and was gonna buy a pound of the hops i use most. I'm pretty space limited though and don't really want to have a 50lb bag of malt sitting around as well as a grain crusher. I could make it...

    Fridge freezing up

So my kegerator is turning into a block of ice. I suspect I need to just get some fans going in there to force some airflow over the fins . What do you guys think?

    Long pump run

Does anyone have long pump runs from their kettle to their fermentors? I'd like to make my fermentors stationary but it would need 30 feet of 2/5"(10mm) hose. Would love some feedback of unexpected out comes from this.

Accidental Eisbock - who wants Helles anyways.

Was doing my first cold crash of a Helles on my DIY glycol chiller. I for some reason thought that -10c was the right temperature for the glycol. Guess again!! Tastes alright but I ain't driving anymore

    Finning and Cold Storage

Do you guys cold storage and gelatin everything or just lagers? I'm thinking more for Pale ales, IPAs and DIPA. Obiously not stouts or New England or Milkshake IPAs. Cold storage standard practice 2 weeks at 4c(40f) while carbonating good for most non lagers?

maybe too much Starsan in my keg

Doing my first run through my keg washer and apparently it turns the inside into a solid brick of starsan foam. Me being a half sleepy dope racked directly into it before tipping it. The second one i racked had about a 1 litre of properly diluted starsan in it. I figure thats what i racked...

    Heat Transfer Glycol/Water vs Ethanol

Curious if a 30/70 Glycol / Water mix will transmit heat better than a Ethanol mixture (ie RV Antifreeze) Have a bath sitting at -10c but the fermenter it's pumping through the coil of won't drop below 1c now. I'd like to cold crash at 0c ideally.

Glycol Chiller Build - Gylcol vs Ethanol

Here's my glycol build. Not finalized but wanted to cold crash the fermenter so figured I'd test it out. STC 2000 controls the AC unit. Wiring is the compressor hot and low fan wire connected to input hot with a paper clip and neutral input to start capacitor with paper clip. Everything to...

    Shocking yeast with glycol

Hey guys I'm currently designing a multi vessel fermentation setup. I don't have the space for a chamber. I'm very space limited but have technical expertise so have decided to go DIY glycol chiller route. Glycol bath and AC on balcony, fermentation chambers just inside wall. I'm wondering if...
