Best way to determine temp of beer in opaque food-grade bucket?

What's the best way to figure out what temperature my beer is inside my food-grade bucket? I guess I could take the lid off and stick a thermometer in but I'd rather not do that.

    4th batch, three questions

    1. I just tried my 3rd batch, an American Wheat and it tastes extremely good even only after 2 weeks in the bottle. The first two batches I brewed were too sweet and carbonated unevenly. I made a few changes - moving the fermenter to get a lower fermentation temperature, pouring the cooled wort...

    What is your cleaning/sanitization process?

How much cleaning do you do? I am not sure if I'd doing too much or to little but cleaning/sanitizing are time-consuming. My process is 1. hose the bucket off till I cant see any dirt/sludge 2. fill it to the brim, add Oxyclean, wait 1 hour or more 3. rinse 3 times and store And then...

    "Homebrew" taste

I have two friends that homebrew and I homebrew too. Each of the beers we've brewed taste sweet - what I've come to know as homebrew taste. I don't know how to describe it otherwise. Someone suggested we're using too much priming sugar, but I've jsut been using kits from the store which come...

    Just tried first brew...

I brewed a Hefeweizen. Let it ferment for 3.5 weeks, then tried it after 5 weeks in the bottle. I didn't do FG and OG, because I forgot to sanitize the hydrometer Smell- Doesn't smell great - smells sweet, homebrew-y like the other home brews Ive tried. I don't really know how else to...

    blowoff frequency

How often does a blowoff happen with an airlock? I get the feeling most brewers on this site don't use an airlock. I have the plastic bucket with a hole in the top - how do you keep it airtight? How often do you have to change the water in the blowoff bucket?

Temperature or disturbance a bigger issue in fermentation?

I just brewed a 5 gal batch and I have two options: Drive it 1.5 hours in the car to my dorm, where I have air conditioning and can maintain a good temperature. There are no stoves at college though. My primary is a white food bucket Leave it here where the temp is about 80. I could put it...

Just finished 1st brew day! Notes & mistakes

Brewed a Hefeweizen. Have two shirts around plastic fermenting bucket, fan running, but it's so dry here in Southwest that the shirts won't help much. I also used White Labs liquid yeast with a starter that I made about 2 hours before pitching it into teh fermenter. John Palmer says make the...

Just bought a kit! 3 questions

I just bought a kit! My brewing conditions aren't optimal - I could use your help with a few things 1. I only have a primary fermenter and I have to leave town for 4 weeks after brewing. Is it okay to leave the beer (German Hefeweizen) for that long in the primary without bottling it? I...

Good beers to ferment at high temperature?

What kind of beers (if any) will ferment well at 75-80 degrees? Due to travel etc I have to leave the primary for 2-3 weeks at a time alone in the house.

Maintaining low ferment temperature in 85 F house

I am trying to brew in a house that I leave empty for two weeks at a time or more. The problem is that this is in the southwest US and the house temperature gets to 85 F or more. Is there any way I can keep the beer cool while I am not in the house? Most of the fermentation techniques suggest...

    2nd Batch - Some mistakes

We steeped the grain for 40 mins because my friend had to go run and buy a strainer, and then chucked it in Added the wort before bringing the pot to full boil (although maybe this is what you should do?) Everything went fine for a while, then I transferred the wort to the fermenter and let it...

Making 1st batch ever, may have killed the yeast - help?

My friend and I are making our first batch ever, I poured 1 cup of water in our sanitized measuring cup, heated it to 120 by accident, let it cool to 100 or so, then poured in the yeast and stirred, and 40 minutes later it hasn't foamed over, just a little bit of foam on the edge. Did I kill the...
