Old Foghorn Clone Recipe: Which is closest to real thing?

Based on my recollection of taste and the way Anchor describes this beer, I always perceived it as a hybrid of English BW in malt character with conservative use of American hops. Not as in-your-face as eg SN’s Bigfoot and others. I would definitely spring for a higher end pale malt like and...

Old Foghorn Clone Recipe: Which is closest to real thing?

I brewed the AHA recipe (60L) soon after they published the issue in 2018 with several Anchor recipes. I used Muntons Pale and Simpson’s Medium Crystal which is around 60 ish Lovibond. It was darned close to Anchor OF. Perhaps a mix of 60L and 80L would be perfect. After a two week primary...

    Golden Promise

I use it as the base malt in clones of Belhaven Pilsner and Twisted Thistle IPA. It is great in anything UK-ish

Seems like it’s time for pre-happy hour warm-ups in the Eastern Time Zone, no?

Note the not-hazyness of this delicious IPA 😁

    American Wheat Beer Recipe

Back to the OP, I wonder if the combo of maize, SO4 and relatively high chloride is masking the desired orange flavor? I’d nix the maize, reduce the chloride to 50-ish ppm, bump up the sulfate 10-20 ppm, ferment with US-05 or WY1010, and increase the orange in one of the ways already...

    Beer History Books?

I stumbled across this at the library several months ago. Part history, part soap opera, a revealing synopsis of the Busch family and the inner workings of AB. Loved it.

    Where to find oxygen

My last 20 cu ft tank lasted about 4 years and 125 brews (mostly 5 gal batches). And I typically oxygenate at 2.0 for 45-60 seconds. I’m about 20 brews into my current tank. The initial outlay for a bigger tank is pretty $pensive but much less than the equivalent number of mini-Lowes tanks.

    Brewer's Friend vs. Beersmith

The BF phone app has come a long way. I like it in a pinch, but still prefer the UI on my laptop. Probably cuz I am old fashioned that way. From a brewing perspective, I switched to BF from ProMash (yeah, I’m old) in 2013 and have done 250 ish recipes with it. Works great for me!

    Cutting tips of bines

Not sure of your trellis/wire/rope setup, but can you fold-over the tops/tip back along their trellis and secure loosely with some twine so they don't flop around and tangle w/ other varieties? Sounds like you have a few hops growing to one central point?? I used to grow hops up 15 ft poles...

    Water profile for an IPL

Lots of variables here, but also factor in yeast selection. Eg, A highly attenuating yeast like 34/70 might call for a more balanced water profile vs a malt-accentuating Munich strain which might need a higher sulfate ratio to magnify the hops bite. FWIW my fav IPL’s have been brewed w/ WLP838...

What are you listening to (music!!!) right now? Embarrassing or not... share

It’s basically Journey w/ John Waite on vocals. I love me some Neal Schon—Blistering leads. Even if the song is steeped in Velveeta. And the little synth accents in the chorus magnify the cheese.

    Repitching lutra kveik-amount to use?

I made an educated guess on OG and slurry age and Mr. Malty says about 180ml or 6oz. I’ve used slurries for a handful of Voss and Lutra batches and they seem to perform like similar quantities of other non-Kveik ale strains.

    How did you find us?

Well, I went west til I smelled it, then south til I stepped in it. And (save for a short ill-advised hiatus 6 years ago) here I am 15+ yrs later.

    I Quit Smoking

In the early-80’s, my dad did handyman work in Detroit while in seminary. I helped him with a job one summer day scrubbing and bleaching drop-ceiling tiles from an office full of smokers. I still remember drinking a Big Gulp on the drive home with the brown/yellow crud all over my hands and...

    garage brew space

The rolling cart was a CraigsList find. I cut the legs down, though. It was a taller food prep cart, me thinks. And having a sink in my brew space is huge, vs washing stuff in the house. Keeps SWMBO happy, or at least less-pissed :)

    What are you drinking now?

Hard-earned Sun King “Crispy 500” American Light Lager at SK-Kokomo (IN). Been burning the candle at both ends working my day job remotely and helping my mother downsize to an apartment. Fan-freaking-tastic beer!

    homebrew competitions

Also check out local homebrewing clubs. They usually have BJCP judges and experienced brewers who will give honest feedback either in person, or, they might be willing to take a sample home and email you some critique. This is almost better than judging feedback as you can have some back n forth...
