    Which DME for starter

Which DME do you generally use for yeast starters? I used to use just a pale, but LHBS suggested wheat. Guy said it had the most nutrients in it for the yeast to get going. I've never heard this anywhere else and have been wondering if it is true or not.

Similar flavor in 2 different brews

I recently brewed biermunchers centennial blonde and am now bottling orfys mild mannered ale. I have noticed a similar taste to both. They both taste like toasted cake. Like if you eat the remains off a white cake after it comes out of the pan. I assume it is coming from the grain, but...

    Organizing recipes in Beersmith

Any recommendations for organizing recipes in Beersmith. If you brew a beer often do you have to rename the recipe each time to save a copy of that brew sesion?

    Mash Time Helps Efficiency?

Will a longer mash length, say 75 min vs 60 min increase effeciency. I have done three AG batches all different recipes. Two called for a 60 min mash. One called for 75 min. I greatly increased effeciency with the 75 min mash.

    Keg Pressure Rising

I have a 5 gal corny w/ a 20# CO2 tank. Both are stored in a temp control freezer held about 40F. I filled the keg with apfelwine set the regulator to 12# and let it sit. A week later poured a glass. It was way overcarbed. I turned off the gas and bled the keg...set it again at 12#. This...

    Sparge to 1.010 question

I often read that you should sparge until you are pulling of wort with a gravity of 1.010. Question - Do you just test a sample with you hydrometer at maybe 150F and adjust for temperature or do you chill it down to 60F?

    Rust Removal

I just bought a large chest freezer today for very cheap. I am planning on turning it into a kegorator/lagering box. It has some rust on the outside and the inside. I have it unplugged and opened to dry out for a day or two. How do I treat the rust areas...sand them...paint over them????

    First Lager

I just picked up a large chest freezer today and will join the lagering ranks!! Does anyone have an easy recipe for a first time lager. Preferably extract w/ steep or partial grain, but I could convert an AG recipe if needed. Does not need to be a light lager. I really like black lagers...

    Thank You HBT'ers

I am brewing my third batch right now since coming off a 5 year break from brewing. My first attempt back was before I found HBT. I made a lot of stupid mistakes. Since finding HBT, I have really learned a lot of great techniques. 1. I am now up to full 5 gallon boils. 2. Use my...

    Dry Hopping Looks Like...

I bottled my first dry hopped pale ale today. I used whole leaf hops and as I racked into the bottling bucket the level of liquid dropped and the hops approached the bottom of the car boy. I realized that the hops reminded me of diving in a kelp garden off the coast of San Diego.

    Dry Hopping Questions

I am dry hopping for the first time right now. Last night I racked onto 1 oz Cascade in a carboy. The hops are all floating on the top. Is that normal? Am I getting everything out of the hops or should I try to push it down into the beer? Also is it possible to overhop, by leaving the hops...

    Where to Dry Hop?

As with everything I am sure there are many ways to do this, but am wondering what techniques others use. I have a light pale ale in primary that I want to dry hop. I have never dryhopped before. I was going to dry hop in the secondary(a 1-2-3 type of schedule). I have been reading about...

    Safale 05 Fermenting 52-56 F

I am wondering if I will have any problems from fermenting too cold. My last batch didn't chill quickly and fermented too hot. It ended up with a lot of fruity esters. To fix this I took a large styrofoam box from work and fit my bucket into it. The bucket is sitting in a plastic...

    Secondary Fermentation Temperature

Should a beer in secondary be held at the same temp that the primary was? How about once a beer is bottled?

    Immersion chiller questions?

I have just stepped up to full 5 gallon boils and realize that a chiller is not an option anymore, but a necessity. It took my first 5 gallon boil 3 hours to cool to temp using the sink & ice method. I am good at chilling, but this volume is ridiculous without a chiller. I am looking to get...

    Greetings from Frisco Texas

I am new to this site, but not to brewing. Started brewing in '97 from a kit someone gave me for a wedding gift. I went to extracts w/ specialty grains quickly also started kegging. Before kids my wife let me keep a keg in our apartment fridge. I am coming back from a 2-3 year hiatus...
