    Conan vs California Ale Yeast?

Just purchased some Conan from the yeast bay and brewed an IPA. I've never smelled such a citrusy yeast before, amazingly delicious smell in the starter, can't wait to try it out. Would like to culture it from the can, but it's a hard beer to come by.

    Pearl Snap Clone? Austin Beerworks

Yes, I'm not sure if it's because the beer is so new, or no one has researched it yet. I just had some last week, and loved it, but I am too new a brewer to pick it apart, I'd just like to know the yeast used and the hop profile. The yeast ester profile is amazing!

    Yeast: phases, and pitching practices.

Appreciate the info, I've gotten from several sources that it's a 6 of one 1/2 a dozen of another type of situation, though if you are not going to pitch a starter at high Krausen, then give it time to ferment out and settle before pitching in the wort.

    CS223's cheap stir-plate build

Would be helpful if you list where you got the parts, and price! In case others want to take a shot at it. Looks great!

    Yeast: phases, and pitching practices.

As a fairly new all grain brewer, have some fundamental questions concerning life cycles and growth stages of brewing yeasts. I've found there are some gaps in most of the online, and published literature that leave me with some questions and concerns about when to pitch, and when to re-start...

Adding sugar to dry out a beer!?

Thanks again for all the previous help posters have given to this newb! I have almost solved all my efficiency problems, and am going to venture into IPA territory for my next brew. Been reading some great stuff about IPA's online here and other places, hop bursting is a term I've come to know...

    CS223's cheap stir-plate build

Today I did CS223's ridiculously cheap stir plate build. Took a total of 25 mins to build. Followed his plans mostly to a T. Except for the washer and the super glue. The Neodymium rare earth magnets were strong enough to not require super glue, although I may secure them later. Note the 6-32...

    Help! What's in my wort?

Great post, I had also noticed this in some of my brews, but just figured it would settle out, now I know what it is! Your question helped another noob! Thanks!

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

So enjoyed a lovely Sunday with fall colors, and a little time off from work today. Was not planning on brewing, all fermenters are full, though wanted to goto the LHBS and fiddle with the mill, and see what kind of results I can get. The first picture is running some 2-row through at 0.45mm...

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

Stratslinger Excellent info, and I will investigate, I'm a little taken aback at how folks think the LHBS guy is lying or crazy, you all must have had some really terrible experiences in the past. I think it's much more likely, that a newbie brewer, is not accurately conveying information in...

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

I was playing on the cautious side with this last batch. The next batch I'll be switching to a fly sparging system, and I'm also going to send all the grains throughout twice at the 0.45mm setting. I'm learning a lot with each go, and thanks to he advice here from the forum, I'm documenting...

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

Well I'm quite pleased this go around. 6 lbs Pilsen 3 lbs wheat 1 lb caramels 3 lbs flaked wheat For 10 lbs of fermentables I got 2.2 gal @ 1.084 first runnings, stirred the hell outa it and batch sparged 3 .5 gallons in 10 min @ 1.034. Pre-Boil was 1.050 right where the recipe said. So...

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

So I went to the brew store today, talked with my guy, he's willing to adjust the mill to whatever I like. We ran the Pilsen and specialties through his normal setting of 0.45mm which he said was just below the factory setting of 0.50 that the mill came set on. He said much tighter than 0.45 and...

How to calculate efficiency? Why is mine so low!

Great info Owly, yes I agree the crush needs to be improved greatly. I'm just confused by this LHBS the guy has been amazing helping me get set up, and claims (and he does a lot of buisness) that his crush is good, and guys are getting good efficiency. If everyone was as low as me I'm sure there...
