    Cider filtration system

I've decided to try something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOclJsjZnyY which uses a home water filter setup. I'll let you know next month how it goes. There is a thread here where someone made a 2 stage single pass filter using similar stuff...

    Clear cider or not?

Almost all ciders will clear, with or without pectin enzyme. It just takes time. I've had some batches not drop fully clear until six months after I have bottled them. Remember cider is all about patience. I have found that time to clear is often dictated by what yeast I use. Beer yeast tend...

    750ml clear crown cap

Not sure why these are so hard to find but I am looking for about 20 cases of 750ml clear bottles with a crown cap finish. Preferably with decent shipping to PA. The few online places I have found that have them either won't ship them or are on the West coast and charge 3x the price of the...

    My Harbor Freight Cider press

Black Spackers? I assume you mean the racks? Those are cut down bread trays which I think I mentioned in the video. I got the idea from Reverend Nat which is that second video that someone else linked to. May not be the most efficient rack but definitely the least expensive. Anyone else...

    My Harbor Freight Cider press

I got the material for the press cloths from here http://www.fabricwholesaledirect.com/products/sheer-voile-fabric?variant=1343590083 It says 100% polyester and no mention of any fire retardant. I washed it twice anyway with an extra rinse on each cycle. The cider tastes fine, I'm not really...

    My Harbor Freight Cider press

Building my Harbor Freight Cider press and garbage disposal scratter was my big summer weekends project. It all came together yesterday. I made a short video if anyone is interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfzUKigkmOE&feature=youtu.be Biggest thing I learned is that the capacity...

    Press cloth

Just to update this, I used the press cloths I mentioned above for the first time yesterday. They work great! They really let the juice through and kept the solids down to a minimum. Hard to beat at $1.50 each.

    Press cloth

I ended up buying 5 yards of "Faux Linen Sheer Voile (118") - White" at $2 a yard from http://www.fabricwholesaledirect.com/ Even if they only least one season they only cost me about $1.50 each with the shipping. I was able to cut it up into aprox 12 press clothes of the size I needed...

    Press cloth

Anyway have any recommendations on press clothes? I've already read tons about different cloths and know pretty much what to look for. Looking for specific suggestions, and experiences. Thanks.

    Garbage Disposal recomendation

Thanks for hijacking the thread. If anyone has any recommendations on garbage disposal models I'm still interested in hearing them. Thanks.

    Garbage Disposal recomendation

I'm trying too build an Apple Scratter based on a new Garbage Disposal as has been suggested elsewhere. There is an old thread on this site that recommends a 1HP Waste King Legend 8000 series. Being 1HP it should be plenty powerful and it does have a Stainless Steel Shredder Ring and Impeller...

Bulk aged hard cider - how to carbonate?

I do the plastic tube in the picnic tap route as well with chilled bottles. My problem is that the carbonation starts to foam as soon as I put it into the bottles, I can usually fill a bottle about half way before the foam over flows. Then I wait for foam to subside and then add some more cider...

can you use bread yeast ?

Don't have access to yeast? You can order it online from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=cider+yeast&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Acider+yeast 10 packs of Red Star Champagne yeast is only $5.50. If Amazon doesn't ship to where you are I am...

    Angry Orchard

Don't say that to loudly, depending on your location. This was taken in a cider bar in London last month.

White film at top of bottles

Its a 750ML wine bottle. head space may be a little low but is about typical for what I see with mass produced wines. I think the white film was some sort of scale or residue. After giving the bottles a hard shake it broke up and settled to the bottom of the bottle.

White film at top of bottles

They have been bottled about a month. Have not opened any yet. Was hoping to serve at a reception in a few weeks and need every bottle. It is not bubbles, the film is stuck to the side of the bottle and does not 'wash off' when I tip the bottle.

White film at top of bottles

I bottled this about month ago and now I have a white film ring at the top of the bottles. These have not been pasteurized. No idea what this is. ideas?

    "Food Grade" plastic water bottles?

I use 3gal plastic water bottles I get at Walmart for $7. The 3gal size is convient and can be easily moved by hand and is easier to clean. Of course after leaving room for head space and whats left in the lees you are only left with about 2.5 gal of product. I've started using 3.5gal square...

    GLINTCAP results

So on a lark I sent two bottle on my cider off to the Great Lakes international Cider and Perry competition. They just posted the results...and I won bronze! http://www.greatlakescider.com/glintresults_2014.pdf The New World Cider category had 56 entries with 38 medals so I don't know...
