    So Cal Yeast Exchange

Hey Guys, I recently made a batch of Irish Red Ale using WLP004 and I was able to harvest and grow enough for my next batch of Irish Red plus more, but I was planning on making an IPA, a Dunkelweizen, or an Oktoberfest next which would call for different yeast strains. So I was thinking it...

Is the refrigerator killing my yeast?

Are you using new WL vials of yeast for your starters? did you check the date on them? What yeast are you using? Your starting temp is a little higher than I normally do for my starters, but you should be fine. You really need to take OG and FG readings on your starter if you want to be...

Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

Risk is what you are willing to expose yourself to . . . glass is less porous and typically has a longer life than plastic as long as it is handled properly. That doesn't mean that accidents don't happen, but I for one is willing to take that risk and I will continue to use glass carboys, ride...

Cider - slow ferment and gravity question.

I agree with Yooper completely, but I had one question, why did you add pale DME at first?

    Yeast Nutrient

What yeast are you using? how big is your batch? You might think about making a starter if you are concerned about your yeast health

    Homebrew ROI?

I know all about the model airplane ROI vs flight time . . . trust me on that one. My first flight was 20-30 secs and it cost me way too much, but I have gotten better. I really like brewing, it has some synergy to my cooking passion and my creative personality. I definitely think its worth it...

Best Place to Buy a Carboy

Where is the best place you guys/gals have found to buy glass carboys? Its easy to find a decent price carboy, but the shipping is always a killer. Anyone on the internet ship carboys for free? suggestions?

    Homebrew ROI?

I normally spend somewhere between $4 and $8 for a 22oz bottle so if I can get to the point where I would rather drink my home brew vs the $8 22oz bottle I think it will be well worth it and make me rationalize buying more equipment :rockin:

Filtering wort from pot to fermenter

I was thinking about making one of these: http://billybrew.com/hop-filter-build and using it to transfer from my brew kettle to my bottling bucket and then to my carboy. Haven't tried it yet, but I think it would work well, plus it would give me 2 chances to arerate the wort

    Homebrew ROI?

As a newish home brewer/engineer/guy that loves to spend money on cool stuff, I was just wondering how much you guys think you have spent on brew kettles, carboys, fancy ferment chambers, kegs, keezers, etc and how many bottles of beer you have made. I really enjoy making my own beer (or...

    Morebeer Irish Red Extract FG

The first time I made it (first batch ever) I kinda forgot about it for awhile in the primary, at least 3-4 weeks and it turned great. It sounds like I just need to be more patient . . . How long do you guys bottle condition for? You think 7-10 days is enough?

    Morebeer Irish Red Extract FG

I recently brewed my 2nd batch of the Morebeer's Irish Red extract. This time I decided to "do it right" and record my OG and FG. I started with an OG of 1.054 and after about 8 days at 68-70 in the fermenter with WLP004, it is at 1.018. Anyone else make this kit? What was your FG? Am I ready...

1st "Test" batch of Hard Cider

I'm planning on bottling so the kegging option is out. I'm going to try different amounts of lactose and some corn sugar in about a week or 2 to see how sweet they turn out and scale up to 5 gallons from there . . . and hopefully they won't bottle bomb on me I have another batch of Irish Red...

1st "Test" batch of Hard Cider

What do you use to clear your cider? I was looking around and I saw that I can sweeten cider with lactose. Anyone have any experience with sweetening cider with lactose? I was thinking I could ferment it down to ~.990 and then add some lactose and corn sugar before bottling that way it will...

1st "Test" batch of Hard Cider

Its been sitting in my pantry around 68-70 deg F. What temp do you normally ferment your cider at? What cider yeast do you use? The Red Star I used was a champagne yeast, but I heard it works well with cider and its dirt cheap. I'll let it sit for another week or 2 to see how it does. I have a...

1st "Test" batch of Hard Cider

So I decided to make a test batch of cider with store bought cider. Not the ideal ingredients, but I thought I would give it a try. I mixed up about a gallon of apple cider + brown sugar to get to a OG of 1.082 and mixed it with plenty of red star yeast and split it between 2 growlers. Then I...
