Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

Thanks for this info, I just ordered a refractometer to start to measure better at different stages like this. I dont mind lower efficiency as long as I am consistent (I was consistent at 55%), but it just makes me feel like I am doing something wrong. I will see how the second brew goes and...

Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

    Its a false bottom: http://www.morebeer.com/products/mash-tun-15-gallon-heavy-duty.html 14"H x 18"D Deadspace is 1.25g, I leave 2 1/4 cups behind after draining.

Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

I am batch sparging. My temp dropped from 152 > 149 after 40 minutes, so I direct fired the mash tun while recirculating to bring it up to 152 for the last 20 minutes. Im also starting to think I am not stirring vigorously enough. I stirred at mash in, 20 minutes, 40 minutes but did not...

Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

Well I gained 12 points of efficiency last night. Went from 55% to 67%. Still gotta figure out what I am doing wrong. At 0.036 mill gap last night my grain looked a tad flourish, but I did not have a problem with stuck sparge at all. Maybe I am not stirring vigorously enough. I did run the...

Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

Yep I verified the PH, mash temps were rock solid. The only thing is I was leaving all that wort in the deadspace. The drain is also off to one side I was not pulling from the middle. Now I am pulling from the middle and only leaving 2 1/4 cups. I am brewing tomorrow so I will report back.

Mash Tun - Dead space vs whats actually leftover

Hey Guys, Previously on my setup (MoreBeer 15g Mash Tun) I was leaving 1.25g in the tun because of the big deadspace in this setup. I am having pretty bad efficiency even after starting to crush my own grain (.033 mill gap) and doing everything else so I am thinking I am getting hurt by the...

Brewsmith - Mash Tun Deadspace / Whats left in the kettle

Hey Guys, Quick question, I just bought a dip tube for my mash tun. I have 1.25gallons of dead space, and previously was using that number as my mash tun deadspace and having beersmith calculating it. Worked ok but my efficiency was terrible (figure I was leaving way to much wort...

Bought a pump - Recirculate mash or not - so confused :/

I guess I should say I am using a MoreBeer 15 Gallon Heavy Duty mash tun. In about 65 -75 degree weather I lose about 5 degrees per hour so I direct fire and stir once or twice during a 60-90 minute mash rest. As I said I am mainly using the pump for whirlpooling and chilling so recirculating...

Bought a pump - Recirculate mash or not - so confused :/

Hey Guys, I just bought a March pump assembly from More Beer. I am using this to do whirlpool hop stands at 170 degrees, and to chill rapidly using the whirlpool arm attached to my my immersion chiller. So that brings me to this...since I will have the pump.... should I recirculate the mash...

Keg Dry Hop = Hop particles

Thanks, hoping it clears up in a couple of pints. If not, just getting a little extra plant fiber with the beer ;) It tastes fantastic....dry hopping in the keg is the business.

Keg Dry Hop = Hop particles

Hey Yooper, thanks for the reply. I am using the hop bags from morebeer.com. Seemed pretty tight, but maybe not. http://www.morebeer.com/products/bag-9-12-mesh-hop.html Is it safe to drink lol?

Keg Dry Hop = Hop particles

Hey Guys, First time dry hopping in a keg. Used 4oz whole leaf Cascade hops in a DIPA. Its been about a week at 42 degrees / 12 psi. I pulled one pint out and noticed there are a ton of hop particles, so I pulled another pint and the same thing. Is this normal? Should I be worried...

Warming beer kegs up, then cooling back down (space limitation)

Hey Guys, So my dilema is my Keezer acts as my fermentation chamber. I used to only have 1 keg, but now I have 3. That means I can no longer fit my fermentor into the fridge. Is it ok to pull the kegs out during fermentation (so they will reach room temp) then when I am done fermenting...

Hey Guys, I am taking a stab at brewing something dark...like reaaaaal dark. I have never been a fan of Stouts that have mega bitter mega coffee taste. So i tried a chocolate stout and a chocolate porter and I was pleasantly surprised that I really liked it. So I dug around and was looking...
