SG reading from tilt and refractometer

Hi All, I brewed a cream ale yesterday and when I took a final gravity reading I get ~1.041 with my hydrometer and by tilt read ~1.051 quite a difference. This was at ~66F (19C). I've brewed many all grain batches now and have used the tilt for a few years, I've never seen this kind of...

    Older hops

Hi All, I've tried to brew a tank 7 clone (recipe modified from a BYO magazine). I used some Amarillo hops that I bought in Denver (cobrew) in 2017, the Yakima website tells me they are 2016 harvest. I've kept the hops unopened in the freezer since I bought them. They seemed fine when opened...

    Automated home brew system

Hi I'm interested in buying a automated home brew system such as picobrew, however I don't know much about them. I'm looking for something small, counter top ideally, bread maker size, that doesn't rely on custom ingredient packs and is a reasonable price. I already have a grainfather (its...

Help finding homebrew store in the bay area...

Thanks to all who replied, I'll be heading over from the UK next week. I'll be sure to head out to More Beer, I like to bring back some hops and brew myself a clone of something I've tried while I've been visiting (last time I brewed a clone of Odell's cut throat porter, very nice). I'll also...

    Aluminium in fermenting beer

Thanks for the responses - both very helpful. I have a stainless rod, but am concerned about the low thermal conductivity. I've looked for anodized aluminium rods and cant find anything suitable. I've thought about using the peltier in an air cooled fermentation chamber, but running at max I...

    Aluminium in fermenting beer

Hi, I'm trying to build a DIY brewjacket (peltier/TEC immersion chiller for fermenting). I'm wondering if I can use a standard aluminium rod attached to the peltier to chill the fermenting beer? Or is it unsafe to have aluminium in contact with wort/beer?? Any help would be great...

    DIY Brewjacket

Thanks, that's really useful to know. Can I use a standard aluminium rod or does it need treating in some way?

    DIY Brewjacket

Hi All, I'm looking for some way of getting control over my fermentation temperatures. Due to limited space I don't have room for a fridge/freezer. So I'm considering a DIY brewjacket solution for 2-3 Gallon batches. I've managed to get a TEC/Peltier running using a computer PSU and...

    How to cool kegs???

I'm located in the UK. Current humidity is 67%, I think the dew point is about 50F and current temperature is about 70F. I'm guessing that the high humidity would make a swamp cooler impractical? Cheers!

    How to cool kegs???

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, yes, I mean an out building (shed). Unfortunately I can't dig up the floor, but its a good idea! The swamp cooler sounds like the easiest and maybe cheapest option. I'm hoping to get from about 80-84F down to about 50F is that possible? Cheers!

    How to cool kegs???

Hi, I currently keg my beer and store it in our outhouse. It gets pretty hot in there during the day and so I'd like some way of cooling my kegs. My only problem is that I have no power in there. I've thought about solar and TEC cooling or evaporation using a water bath, t-shirt as a...

    Treatment of RO water

Hi All, I'm going to attempt to brew two clones tomorrow, bluemoon and fat tire. I'd like to use Reverse Osmosis water for this but I'm unsure about how to treat it. Could you suggest suitable salt additions please? Cheers!

    Carb with honey?

Thanks for correcting me ColoHox. I've just had a google and see lots of things saying 90-95% fermentable so really as you say. When I look at my brewing software it tells me 76% potential yield, so maybe I've got confused. Cheers!
