Stainless conical - beer stone? discoloration?

I bought a used conical. The insides were a little “dirty”. Looked like a buildup of beer stone I thought. I soaked with PBW and it cleaned up good. At certain angles, I can see kind of a “rainbow” coloration in different areas. Thought it might still be some beer stone remnants or...

    Hops combination question

Making a NEIPA tomorrow. I have Mosaic, El Dorado, Amarillo and Simcoe on hand. I was thinking of Amarillo at 10 mins, or maybe flameout and then whirlpool with Mosaic and El Dorado. Maybe a splash of Amarillo then also? Should I do a small bitter addition at 60 mins with something like...

Water chemistry question - sparge water

I've been experimenting with the Brewfather app, and recently had a water test done so I can start to make adjustments there. Brewfather splits the water additions into Mash and Sparge. I have a HERMS system, so my HLT usually has extra water in it to keep the HERMS coil submerged. So, I'm a...

Where to buy tri-clover ball valves

A couple years back I used brewhardware, but they don't seem to have the selection of ball valves anymore. I'm having a hard time finding "L" 3-way ball valves. Any ideas? Todd

    Cross post - plumbing help

I posted this in Equipment/Sanitation, but thought it might be better suited here - I'm trying to make my brew day a little easier. I have a single tier set up, herms coil in the HLT, and 2 pumps. I use my pumps as "water pump" and a "wort pump". While recirculating after mash in, the water...

    Plumbing Help

I'm trying to make my brew day a little easier. I have a single tier set up, herms coil in the HLT, and 2 pumps. I use my pumps as "water pump" and a "wort pump". While recirculating after mash in, the water pump is just circulating water in the HLT to keep temp consistent. Wort pump is...

My beer has a cider taste....

Maybe it's all in my head, but - I'm attempting to get my new system dialed in. First attempt was on a new recipe. Had a couple expected hiccups, and the beer was ok. Hard to say if the recipe just wasn't great, or if it was the process. So, went back to a known recipe, which is a cream...

    BG14 - Orange flame

My stand has 2 bg14 burners few by VR8200 valves. One burner works great. The other burner I can't get rid of the orange flame. I've checked all the normal stuff and it's fine. I replaced the orifices on both with proper ones from Williams. Orange is not enough oxygen, so should have...

Stout kettle sparge arm - gimmicky?

Does anyone successfully use this? Seems like the flow necessary to get this to work is way to fast for sparging. I recirc with just a silicon tube laying on top of grain bed and would probably be better just sparging through that. It's a HERMS setup. Thoughts? Todd

First run on new HERMS - questions

Things were a little rocky, as expected. Learned a few things though. Not sure about the sparge process. Should it still take a long time, like 30-45 minutes? I went through all my sparge water in about number 10 minutes. Tough to throttle the pumps. Todd

    "Invisible" BG14 flame

I have a low pressure setup, and I can barely see my flames during daylight outside. Think it's plenty hot, and I think the flames are tall, just barely visible however. Is this unusual? Was expecting to see very blue like others I've seen. It's the same with the pilot light. Maybe I need...

Making sense of March 809 models

March seems to have many variations of the 809 pump. Other than the head, are these basically the same thing(realize some have plugs, some don't, etc.)? Will ant variation in max head or GPM come down to what head is on the pump? I have an 809-HS-BR. Was going to buy another because the...

Valve on recirc input - herms

Are most running a valve between herms output and input (either recirce or sparge) on HLT? I can see where it would be helpful to balance input/ouput flows. Todd

    Burner efficiency question

I'm nearing the final stages of my stand. I wanted to test my burner-to-pot distance in terms of burner efficiency. I was able to take water up 42 degrees in about 13 minutes. This was from about 80 to about 122. What I'm wondering is if the ~ 3 degrees/minute should be expected over the...

    SYL-2342 Help

Can I run a jumper from 9 to 13? Or should I run dedicated lines? Or should I run 1 dedicated line to 13 on 1 controller and the from that one to 13 on the other 2? Thanks!! Todd

Fuse blocks - where to buy???

Seems like a silly question, but for some reason I can't seem to find fuse blocks. My control panel wiring is almost complete, but I don't want to plug it in until I install a couple fuses. You would think it would not be that hard to find, but I'm not having a lot of luck. Todd

    3 way switch confusion

Perhaps I'm over thinking this. I plan on have gas fired burners, pid controlled. But, I do want the ability to just run the burner manually. So, I was going to use a 3 way switch with NO contacts for auto-off-on. Will I go from PID to auto contact block to gas valve, and then straight...

    Single tier, automated propane rig

Things are getting close to completion, so thought I'd post my progress. A few quick details before the pics - 11 gauge, 2" box steel BG14 burners, converted to low pressure Honeywell valves Rig mounted water filter Flip up work table Control panel on hinged arm for storage...

    Burner performance question

I test fired my burners today and have a question. With no kettle on the stand, the flame looks great. If I put the kettle on (and this is a low.pressure system), I don't think I'm having issue with exhaust, but I do get flames up the sides of the kettles now and again, and sometimes rolling...

    Testing burners question

I'm wrapping up my stand and want to test my burners. I'll have a control panel, but it's under construction. Is there a way to test the burners with no power to the valves (VR8200, standing pilot)? I'm having a hard time coming up with combination of adapter going from tank line (15/16...
