    Enough Yeast?

I planned on brewing a 6.5 gallon batch of lager (OG 1.048) tomorrow. I made a 2 L starter in a stir plate with Imperial Harvest and then stepped up to a 3.5 L starter. However, after the first 10 hours of the 3.5 L starter being on the stir plate, I noticed significant overflow due to foaming...

    Chloramine in Cooled Wort

Thank you Martin very much for the response. This beer actually was headed to a competition. I’ll probably still enter it so I suppose time will tell. Thank you again.

Thanks rburrelli. I was hoping it was just my neurosis.

    Chloramine in Cooled Wort

I feel like I’m being overly paranoid, but while chilling my wort today (6 Gallons), I noticed a small leak where the hose meets the chiller and some tap water full of chloramines got into my wort. My estimate is probably only a tablespoon or so as it was a very slow leak and I caught it pretty...

    Chlorinated Water and Cleaning

I’ve been brewing for around 12 years and have always been on a well. Recently I moved into a house that has municipal water that is treated (I believe it’s chlorinated). My plan is to use R/O water for the Star San mix but would like to use the tap water for the actual cleaning of the kettles...

Update: just went inside to check on him and he had it up to a rolling boil. Excuse me while I bang my head off the cement here.

    Turbid Mash Issue

I am attempting my 2nd turbid mash today. I did one last year and it was successful. This year I had my Dad helping me. When I pulled the portions of turbid wort I told him to heat them to 180. However, I just found out that he only heat it to 80 degrees. The turbid wort was 80 degrees for about...

Helles Bock HBT BJCP comp winning Maibock

I just tapped this today. Brewed on 1/13 as stated above. Its a wonderful beer! I'm actually going to brew it again mid May. Nice malt aroma with rich flavor. I used all Durst malt in this. The bitterness also seems very much in balance. Excellent.

Helles Bock HBT BJCP comp winning Maibock

I brewed this on 1/13/2019 and mashed at 156. The OG was 1.066 and I pitched a huge starter of wlp 833 at 45 degrees and oxygenated well. Fermentation kicked off in about 20 hours. Its sitting at 48 degrees F now. I will try to remember to report back in late April/early May when I tap it. The...

    Screwed up ordering malt

Thanks guys. That's what I will do then. The OG will be about 1.093 or so (I don't have my notes in front of me). I'll just adjust my IBUs accordingly.

    Screwed up ordering malt

I'm brewing a Dopplebock next weekend. I am used to ordering malt by the pound but found a website where you can enter your actual recipe in and they combine the grain for you. I was in a rush, didn't realize this and ordered too much malt. My basic original recipe for 6.75 gallons was: 14.75...

jmcquesten that is brilliant and I wish I came up with it. Dumb question- where do you get a syringe like that? Also, what is the name of the piece it is connected to, is that just a male QD? Thank you.

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

I chickened out and Brewed the original but am adding cocoa nibs and 3 vanilla beans for 6 days and dark roast whole bean coffee beans for 2 days. I am putting this batch on nitro. Will be ready 1/7. I decided not to scale it up because I read conflicting info about scaling up stouts. Unless I...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

I am brewing this tomorrow but scaled the OG up to 1.075 and the IBUs up to about 50. Planning to put it on Nitro in a few months. Before I brew it I wanted to check with the community and make sure this isn't a bad idea. It's not too late for me to call an audible and brew the original again...
