    Vacuum sealing hops?

I’m in the oversized bag camp. You can weigh out what you need as you go. Reseal the bag and throw it back in the freezer. The trick is getting the bag stock cheap. Last time I bought bag stock, I bought from Walmart.com. Three rolls for 18 dollars. If you lose the seal, just make a new bag. No...

American Wheat Beer Mosaic Honey Wheat

I’ll second all the “this is an awesome beer” comments. I made it for my daughters birthday, and it was a big hit. the only changes I made were moving the FWH addition to 15 mins and dryhopping. IBU’s were about 30. Oh, ya, I changed the name a little to Tropical Honey Wheat. non-home brewers...

    New Imperial brand IPA yeast

being the lazy guy i am, i might call Imperial and talk with them about the yeast. i live about 3 miles from their plant and have talked with them at length, finding them very friendly and helpful. The place is lousy with homebrewers :)

    Pitched ale yeast into lager

That's funny. Just for fun, i googled that beer and got an article in BYO discribing it. Not sure that's a beer i'd enjoy. Beer is bubbling away at 50 degs. Hopefully the banana phenols will be very mild to absent. Doh I know...it's just beer.

    Pitched ale yeast into lager

Thanks! I rehydrated 3 packs of Fermentis 34/70 lager yeast and pitched. This beer is for a wedding in December, so I wanted time to lager for a few weeks. We'll see what happens. I hate banana/clove, so hopefully if it does contribute, it will not be too noticeable. I appreciate the advise.

    Pitched ale yeast into lager

Perfect brew day, but discovered that I'd misread the yeast chart and pitched German Hefe yeast into my Munich Helles. 1. Pitched at 46 degrees where it sits now. 2. Because this is super cold can I just pitch the correct lager yeast? Seems that due to the low temp, the ale yeast will fall...

Fireball Whiskey in Christmas Spice Beer?

Gotta brew a winter spice beer for a Thanksgiving time wedding. The groom loves Fireball whiskey. Someone got the bright idea of putting it in the beer. The recipe I'm going to use is Jamil's Ol' Yule Loggy from Brewing Classic Styles. I'm thinking I'll just use the recipe as is and add the...

    RIMS for Dummies

Yes, the sensor needs to be downstream of the heating element. There are much smarter guys than me in this forum that have the explanation. (I read 'um too). I mounted my tube vertically with the heating element at the bottom so its always submerged. If not, it will melt down. Trust me, its not...

Making the Jump to All Grain.

+1 on all the above. I went all grain on my 3rd batch. Got this OCD thing I guess. The rule of KISS is your friend. Get brewing software. I use Brewsmith and love it, but there are others. Get John Palmer's book "How to brew"-and read it. Knowledge is a good thing, and will save you a lot...

All grain brewing and beersmith trouble.

Couple things I've learned using brewsmith: One of the hardest things I've worked with is getting a consistent boil off rate. It takes some playing around with boiling water to figure it out, and boiling water looks different than boiling wort because of viscosity. This number is important in...

Pot size for cooler mash tun

Save yourself a lot of frustration and enjoy this hobby a whole lot more and get yourself a copy of John Palmers book, How To Brew. I've t only been brewing 18 mos myself and my copy is already pretty beat up. I started all grain after my third batch and am having a great time. ( no, I've never...

    Help With Natural Gas setup

Did the same thing you're doing. Mine is a Blichmann floor burner, and I found the orifice diameter spec in the user guide for natural gas conversion. 1/8 in. Works like a champ. Drilled mine out by hand too. I found a gas ball valve at Lowes that I'm using as a cutoff at the wall. If you can't...

    Garage fridge too warm. Still

Thanks lumper. This morning the temp in the soda can was down to 40. Good to know you can maintain 40 in such extreme heat. I put a small fan inside to circulate cold air cause it was 5 degs warmer in front than back last week. I wonder if the air leak where the cord passes through the door...

    Garage fridge too warm. Still

I have a Whirlpool freezer on top fridge in my garage with 3 full kegs and a co2 bottle in it. I'm trying to use the tstat in the fridge to get the temp I need-37f so carbonation is what I want and can't decide if putting a temp controller on a keg will get me there or if I'm just fighting...

    Heater On Indicator Lamp

No. The lamp stays on regardless. I went to Radio Shack Thurs. and got a 120v neon and threw that in. When across the output it lit 1/2 way, and when the ssr was closed, it went out. Wired it from hot to ground and it worked like an incandescent. Haven't tried an led yet. Maybe a 240 v led would...

    Heater On Indicator Lamp

Your're right Jeff, there isn't a real problem. It's just a "more cool" thing with me to have the indicator lamp on only when the element is on instead of 1/2 on all the time and brighter when the ssr fires. BTW, I found the thread with the resistor fix: in that scenario, it was a 240 volt...

    Heater On Indicator Lamp

Thanks guys. That's a good idea putting the led on the ssr output. I did that with an incandescent panel lamp and the bulb was always half lit due to ssr leakage. I wonder if the led will do that too? I'm just using the lamp to monitor when my rims element (120vac) is on, but you're right; if...

    Heater On Indicator Lamp

Looked all over the forum for a circuit showing an indicator lamp across the input to the ssr from my 2352 pid. Struck out. All I want to do is have a 12vdc lamp light when the output of the controller triggers the ssr. Simple, right? The output from the controller is 11vdc. The bulb measures...

Heat source for a dual stage controller

I use a standard heating pad I had in the cupboard. Taped it on to the back of the carboy with gaffers tape (used by photographers-very sticky and leaves no residue). Plug it into your cotroller and you're done. Cheap and effective and you're set until someone has a sore muscle.
