    Breaking the 1.018 barrier

Long story short, I've only had one batch that has ever fermented past 1.018 in my 18 months of brewing my 5 gallon IPAs. Beers taste pretty good, but would like for them to go further. It seems that whether or not i'm doing extract or all grain, mashing at 147 or 154, thermapen or dial...

    Thermapen

I bought a Thermapen a few months back and used it on my first batch last weekend. I can't believe the difference it makes.. It's such a time saver being able to get accurate readings and I'm never going back to the dial ones.. If anyone is on the fence.. just go for it.

anyone using a hop spider with immersion chiller?

I only brew IPAs and have been throwing my pellet hops right in the kettle. I'm loosing too much wort and cleanup is a PITA, so I'm thinking about investing in a hop spider. I do 5 gallon batches in a converted sanke keg and throw my 1/2"x50' immersion chiller in the boil during the last 15...

Who is brewing on Long Island?

Aside from me of course.. I figured it might be good to know a few brewers on the island so I started this thread. I'm in western suffolk, brew IPAs almost exclusively and have only been brewing about a year, but have about a 15 batches under my belt. Recently went all grain and have been...

What is your strangest brew day mishap?

Curious to see what is the strangest/worst event that interrupted your brew day. I had mine tonight... Tonight I had a Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA clone on the burner and I was approaching the 25 minute additions (most of the hops are in the last 25 minutes), when my 2yr old...

So who mashes their wort for their starter?

So I'm looking to grow a ton of yeast from a few smack packs and I'm debating about making a few gallons of wort to freeze or pressure can. Anyone else doing this? I brew mainly high gravity beers so making 3-4L starters is making me burn through the DME pretty quickly. I'm just curious to...

Keg system gone flat.. beer okay? what to do next?

So I went to draw a pint tonight and got nothing. Was working fine last night and the night before. So here is the scenario.. Last week I modified my one tap system to be able to have two kegs under pressure from one tank. This way i can carb one while I enjoy the other. I think my...

    bubblegum in 2nd AG batch

My 2nd AG batch has some off flavors (bubblegum) and I could use some input. The background: An IPA that started off with a 3L starter of 1056 OG 1.070 FG 1.010 (my lowest FG ever?) Fermented at 65-68 degrees I sampled it right before kegging tonight and it definitely has an off flavor...

question about doing 10 gallon batches with 5 gal equip.

I like to brew big beers (15lb+ mashes) and typically do 5 gallon batches. I have a big enough brew kettle but only have a 10 gallon mash tun. Is there any harm in making a batch of wort, dumping it into my boil kettle, then making another batch and then doing a double batch in my kettle (a...

1st AG Batch. STRONG nutty flavor

Just kegged my first AG batch. Everything went well but I broke my own rule of only changing one thing at a time. In addition to going all grain, I also experimented with reusing yeast that I washed and made a starter out of. I tasted it and it seems to have a really strong sort of...

    Noob yeast washing question

I brew a lot of IPAs and do a lot of dry hopping with pellet hops where I just pour it in to my fermenter bucket. Since I don't use hop bags in any parts of my brew process, i'm usually left with a decent amount of hops sludge in my fermenter after I rack. So my question is can I still wash...

    frozen cornies

The thermostat on my Danby DIY thermostat is crap and long story short, I have two frozen kegs. I opened the door to raise the temp inside for about 30 min and then tried to pour. All I got was foam.. the beer seemed to taste sweeter also but maybe because under the foam, there wasn't any...

What should I expect from my forgetfulness?

I kegged my first batch of beer this weekend in my corny and was preparing to carbonate in my kegerator. I put it on 25lbs of CO2 because I was going to force carb based on a few threads I've read, however I ran into an issue. Long story short, my fridge died so I disconnected my CO2 but I...

Bottling from a keg question (Newbie)

So I've got my first batch of beer in the fermenting bucket and it's just about ready to keg/bottle. I want to fill 12-24 bottles of this batch and keg the rest. To make things easier, I'm thinking of transferring everything directly from my 5 gallon bucket to my corny keg, putting a few...

Could use some help with my Flower Power Clone Recipe

New guy here.. about to do my 2nd brew ever. I've been reading an old thread here about some guys doing a clone of Ithaca Brewing Company's Flower Power IPA. The grain bill is as follows: 94% 2row 3% Honey Malt 3% Acid Malt I was planning on subbing the 2 row for the DME listed below...

    Hello from Long Island!

New member here from LI, NY. Just started my first brew last night. Decided to keep it simple and do an extract brew. Also, I figured I'd only use one type of hop so I can learn it's characteristics. I'm all about hoppy beers so I tried an IPA. We'll see how it turns out! So far, not...
