    Am I being impatient?

So I brewed a Lambic on a whim last April not really knowing a ton about Sour Ales, although trying quite a few and liking them. Anyway, basically pitched a pack of Wyeast Lambic Blend in and let it sit until about Christmas. I know it went through the initial fermentation because of airlock...

    New Jersey Home Brew Clubs?

Bobby, sorry if I took it the wrong way. No twisting necessary - I really want to go to some meetings and talk to other people that have the same interest I do. It's just time is a commodity right now but hopefully for not forever. I guess in the end we established Whales is taking new members...

    New Jersey Home Brew Clubs?

Bobby, I'm not arguing with you - I'm just telling you what someone told me in casual conversation. I'm sorry I even brought it up but I thought you might want to confirm/deny. And as far as job/kids it's called priorities, not procrastination. Please don't judge people until you know their...

    New Jersey Home Brew Clubs?

Just from a customer at the BA when I was there last time and they said the reason Whales wasn't taking new members was because you were above 50 people. As far as new clubs I don't think I'd be interested in this if it wasn't 2 miles from my house and at the BA. I know that sounds lazy but I...

    New Jersey Home Brew Clubs?

I know the Brewer's Apprentice in Freehold is starting up a brew club also for folks in South/Central NJ if your interested in getting in on the ground floor. I don't know where they are in the process but for me it's right down the street and I've signed up. Bobby, I heard WHALES was full and...

    Fermentation started hot, then ...

I got it down. It's been hot and humid here in Jersey but I decided to brew last night anyway. Made a Smoked Porter that made the house smell great, pitched WLP002 and put it on the cool garage floor at about 74* thinking the temp would drop to the 68* range like usual before fermentation...

    Trellis size

Those are awesome - I fear to ask how long it took you to build them.

    Trellis size

So back in early April I took the plunge and bought a couple hop rhizomes from Freshops and figured it would be bring a new dimension to my homebrewing. I warned the wife about the trellis I would have to build and the size it would have to be with nothing more than a grumble in return. I have...

    American Wheat

I don't know about that - maybe something wrong in my process but I've made about half a dozen beers with WLP029 and none have ever turned out clear. Again, the American Wheat I did with it gave me a perfectly cloudy wheat appearence. Conversely, I saw someone mention using Nottingham which...

    American Wheat

I actually did an American Wheat last summer and used the White Labs Kolsch yeast (WLP029), which was on the suggestion of my LHBS. It turned out great- nice, easy drinking summer beer. Apparently this is what a lot of American Breweries use, particularly Widmer, to make American Wheat since it...

How long will flaked oats last ?

Great - thanks guys. At least I know I have some alternatives at this point.

How long will flaked oats last ?

I like the toasted oats idea. I assume basically spread them out on a cookie sheet and toast them in the oven until brown?

How long will flaked oats last ?

Ok, making a long story short I just got my shipment from Midwest and by mistake I ordered 10 lbs. of flaked oats instead of 1 lb. (I need to stop drinking when I'm placing orders). I was going to use the pound in a Wit that I'm making, but that leaves me with 9 more pounds and unless I want to...

Making my second beer and curious what i should try next.

You may be better off anyway. The point of doing extract and working your way into all-grain is so that you can get your processes down so that when you get to all grain you can concentrate more on the mass and everything else is second nature. Besides, you can still make a pretty descent beer...

    Yeast substitute?

For future reference here's a good link for yeast comparisons: Yeast Strains

    What hops should I grow?

It would be about 8', maybe a little less, between each plant. I was thinking of doing them in alphabetical order left to right to keep track of which is which so it would be Cascade, 8', Mt. Hood, 8', Nugget, 8' and then Willamette. Another thought of getting just Nugget and Cascade is if I...

    What hops should I grow?

I'm just looking for a little advise. Basically I did a little measuring and I have room for four hop plants in my backyard, two on each side of our gate. The plants would be about 8' apart from each other. I was on Freshops.com this morning and have decided I am definately getting a Cascade and...

Dry yeast in an Imperial IPA?

For most American and English Styles I don't see a reason not to use dry yeast. I got a bad vile of WLP001 and my LHBS did very little to help remedy the situation so I've kinda sworn off liquid yeast unless I'm doing a Belgian or Wheat. As far as the IPA goes, two packs will do you just fine.

    Nottingham Yeast and Clarity

Patience is a virtue, but not when you have an empty keg and nothing on draught !!! :D

    Nottingham Yeast and Clarity

Could I be getting chill haze ??? Thing is the beer isn't clear at warm temps so the cold isn't changing anything.
