    Brew Jacket Immersion pro

The immersion unit I have isn't doing what it's supposed to. I can't get an answer by phone or email from Brew Jacket but I really just want to purchase the unit without all the attendant accessories because I don't need them. Anyone know where I can buy JUST the immersion unit? I've been...

    Strange

So, I brewed on Sunday and had a pretty high OG - 1.077. So rather than youse an airlock I chose to go with a blowoff tube. I'm honestly not seeing much action from the blowoff tube but the temperature of the fermenter is where I would expect it - about 14 degrees higher than room temp. Just...

    Brew day again. :-)

Still working on my IPA. The last batch was actually pretty good but still needs some work. Not "hoppy" enough I guess but the aroma was amazing. Could use to be a little more bitter as well which is why I changed the addition time of most of the extract. Previously I had added the extract at...

Want to force carbonate rather than using sugar. Recommendations?

Pretty much what the title says. I do small batches (5 gallons) and would like to carbonate without sugar. Inexpensive but effective would be ideal. :) Just looking for recommendations. Thanks

    Brewjacket immersion pro cooling issue

So, I got this with a bunch of other equipment so it was basically free. It powers on and it cools "a little" but it's not really doing it. I was thinking it is the heat exchange base but I really have no idea. Has anyone got any experience with this? I mean, if I spend a hundred bucks on this...

Picked up this sweet Fastferment setup on the cheap. :-)

Picked this up today from someone who was selling it in a Facebook brewing discussion group. $175 for the fermenter, the immersion unit and the insulation jacket. Came with all the instructions plus additional cap when the immersion unit isn't needed, etc... Can't really beat the price.

I've never seen active fermentation in that short a time span

Not sure what the difference is - besides the fact that the yeast was refrigerated while waiting for me to have a brew day but I was done at 3 p.m. yesterday and at 9 a.m. this morning, that airlock is a crackalackin. That's pretty awesome. :-) Same yeast as my last batch. Of course, this time I...

Updated my IPA recipe - brewing it today

So this was the original recipe - Designing my first IPA from scratch I found that it was too dark for what I was looking for and while it tasted delicious, it was also a little on the "heavy" side (if that makes sense). I guess I was looking for a crisper flavor. So I changed the DME and LME...

    It's BOTTLING DAY!!!! Ya, Baby!

My first attempt at a homemade IPA Bobs IPA is ready to bottle. I'm so excited. One step closer to my modest dream of creating my own ipa from scratch that I can say, HEY - this is mine.

Brewing beer is easy - and difficult (sort of)

So, my experience with brewing beer tells me that brewing beer is easy , and difficult. The "easy" part is that it really doesn't involve much. You need sugar, hops, and yeast. That is pretty much the basic recipe. The "magic" (if you will) occurs in the "how" you put your brew together. Do you...

    What's the next step up?

So, I've been using my 5 gallon kit for a couple or three years now and I am considering stepping up my game a little - nothing crazy, just you know, maybe some more "professional" type equipment. So what would be my next step up from this 5 gallon kit?

Designing my first IPA from scratch

So, I think after doing many recipes - from full grain to partial and even all DME/LME kits that I sort of have a handle on what I want to do. Of course, I'm going to have to do a lot of tweaking going forward to get it exactly where I want it but I figured I'd throw this out there and see if...

Cooling your wort - a tip I got from a pro

I do 5 gallon batches and was sitting for HOURS trying to cool it down with an ice bath. The guy who owns the place where I buy my supplies (who used to be a professional brewer) told me to get gallon bottles of spring water and cool them in the fridge overnight before brew day then add them to...

    Honey Stout part deux

So, this is my second attempt at getting this right (apparently I should have waited till flame out to put in the honey last time (using clover honey). So here's the recipe 3 gallons of water to start - Attempting to keep the steeping temperature near 160 I'm actually using leftovers from...

This months brew - Honey Stout

I had gone online a while back looking for a Guinness clone. I pretty much followed it to a T except to add an additional half Lb. of Maris Otter. It came out very good but more like the draught than the Guinness that I wanted to make. It was lacking that mouth feel that I wanted. But, I'm...

    Things I've learned about brewing

Here are my lessons learned in no particular order. So, I began brewing in earnest probably sometime in early 2017 (I think). I started with a couple of Mr. Beer starter kits where I pretty much just followed the directions, let it do it's thing and enjoyed whatever came out. It wasn't enough...

My take on an Ale recipe

So, I found this recipe online and because, well, I can't always find the exact ingredients called for at the closes place that has beer brewing supplies, I often end up tweaking the recipe as is the case here. They (in this case) didn't have the specific ale yeast called for or the specific...

    Yeast Washing questions

So, I followed some instructions I found to "wash" the yeast from my last beer. I now have a ball jar sitting in the fridge not quite full (left some head room). I can see the yeast in suspension (pretty sweet). But now what? I know they have to sit there for a bit and settle to the bottom. But...

Had to have a fermentation intervention

So, here's the short story - there really isn't a question in here but I'm a fan of telling stories so here is mine about a GF that I brewed on Sunday. I wanted to make a GF Stout because, well, there aren't any available (at least not where I live) so I did a search, found a basic recipe and...

    w00t! It's brewing day!

Working on a gluten free stout. I had pulled the recipe from the interwebs but it's changed so much except for a few of the basic ingredients that it doesn't resemble that recipe at all. I hope it comes out good. My first GF. What are you brewing today?
