What is wrong with my MLT?

I did my first all grain this weekend and had the exact same problem. Opened my valve got about 2 gallons and then as I was adding my sparge water it came to a complete stop. I had all this liquid at the top. I think the one of the posters called it by saying the braided tube probably collapsed...

Crazy high ABV must be doing something wrong

I must be reading it wrong then, I tasted some of it before bottling and it didn’t taste like it was 16%. I need to figure out how to read the damn thing. It was in the primary for exactly 30 days so I doubt it needed to sit any longer. It looked and smelled great so either way it should...

Crazy high ABV must be doing something wrong

I bottled a Belgium white this weekend and my FG was 1.16, and according to my notes my SG was 1.30. When I threw that into the ABV calculator it says my ABV is 16%. There’s no way that right because this was a partial mash batch, 5 gallons that I got from the beer store. It thought those were...

thanks guys, I think i'm going to give the blonde a try. I'm a little nervous on the entire mashing/sparging process but you have to start someplace.

First AG suggestion on What to brew

I’m tackling my first AG brew this weekend and was looking for a recipe that would be good to start with, something light preferably. I’m open to any suggestions. I’ve been looking through my Joy of Home brewing book but nothing is jumping out at me. Kraig

First AG last night - few notes to other first timers

So how do you measure that? Do I need to measure that?

First AG last night - few notes to other first timers

I’m tackling my first AG this weekend as well. What do you mean you say you had 72% efficiency. I see this number getting thrown around all the time.

Made a mash tun but have questions

No I didn’t take out the inner tube. I’ll try that and see what happens. Do you just cut off one of the ends and slide it out? If I do that how do I cap the open end? I’m not very mechanical to say the least. It is stainless and it was just water which is why I figured it...

Made a mash tun but have questions

I made a mash tun this weekend but I seem to be having two issues. One, I inserted my ball valve but I have a little bit of wiggle when I open and close the valve. Do you put something in the middle to fill in the space in the cooler? (10 gallon Rubbermaid) Second I used a braided hose and...

    How long in the secondary??

I think part of my problem has been not being consistent with how I brew. My last couple of batches have been a bit down. My two batches have had a slight carmel taste and the same off flavors. (one was a ESB clone and the other a dark wheat beer) I let both set in the primary for 4 weeks...

    How long in the secondary??

I usually leave my beer in the primary for at least 3-4 weeks. Is that too long without moving it to a secondary? (partial mash brewer)

    Stainless Chiller vs Copper

I’m pretty worthless when it comes to understanding the mechanics of things, but I’m going to order it tonight and brew this weekend so if it comes in time I’ll let you know.

    Stainless Chiller vs Copper

That is a good find, I have a $75 GC to Midwest from the mother-in-law which is why i was going to go with the pricey one. I'm getting this and a false bottom for my keg to try my hand at all grain.

    Stainless Chiller vs Copper

Thanks for the info, I’m fine with giving the copper a little more TLC since it works better. I love Midwest’s site I just wished they would give a little more info on why one piece of equipment is better than another. I’m too lazy to build one as well, that and my tools a...

    Stainless Chiller vs Copper

I'm ordering a wort chiller today from Midwest and am probably going to go with the Super Efficient Copper Chiller with garden hose connection for $75. I was wonder what the difference between the stainless & copper is? Does the copper cool faster and also does anyone know why that one is super...

Moving to all Grain, equip question

So you think using a false bottom on the keg would be ok? i was worried that temp wouldn't hold. I need to get a lid or something for my keg to help hold the heat in. If not i think i might just buy a cooler and make the mash tun myself. I watched a handful of videos on Youtube yesterday...

    what does RDWHAHB mean?

Talk about missing the obvious, I’ve only read that statement in his book about 200 times. Thanks for the answer on the start as well, I was afraid (not that worried because all of my beers have been really good so far) that I was missing a step.

    what does RDWHAHB mean?

Also, I keep seeing people mention using a “starter” when using the White Labs yeast and I’m not sure what that is. I’m on my 5th batch of extract brewing and I always use White Labs (all my local bew shop has) and have never used that and all my beers seem to start fermenting within the proper...
