Lager 2 weeks, still not done

Twelve hours later and it is just bubbling away, cleaning up whatever diacetyl there may be. I just hope it cleans up whatever residual sugar there is too. I'll give it the 4 day July 4th weekend and check again, and if necessary let it sit some more.

Lager 2 weeks, still not done

I put my Czech Pilsner into the fermentation fridge 2 weeks ago and had it first at 46, then up to 48, then up to 50 for an entire week, and it is still at 1.020. I turned it up to 63 for a D-rest last night. I'm hoping the D-rest will finish the fermentation too. The is still activity in the...

Need help -- Want to open my own brew shop

My advice: If you have to ask here for advice, you're not ready. Take some business classes at your local college, find out everything you need to know about running a store, then MAYBE ask here for specific this or that type of questions, like Wyeast vs. White Labs. And a brief comment...

    Mini fridge fermentation chamber

That's what I've been using too. Having dual carboys means you can use different yeasts and dry hopping with the same batch too, not that I've done that. I've got a pilsener in my fridge right now in the twin carboys fermenting at 48f. Using two carboys like this also gives a place to put...

    Clear Beer!

I used half a Whirlfloc tab and then I just let it sit in the carboy for a while before I put it into the Better Bottles. I didn't filter it, I didn't whirlpool it in the kettle, I just opened the valve and let it dump into the carboy. With the wort that clear I left the crud behind even...

    Clear Beer!

Today I made another batch of my pilsner, everyone's favorite. Take a look at the pic of the hydrometer sample. You can see in the carboy how it settled, and I racked this to twin 3 gallon Better Bottles, leaving almost all of the crud behind. It is crystal clear! We'll see what the yeast...

    Effect of undershooting OG

Yes, it will be beer. None of your friends will notice, only that "You Made this YOURSELF!!! Not bad".

Made a starter, but now won't be brewing

Decided to brew the batch after all.

Made a starter, but now won't be brewing

I made a starter on Friday, and now on Sunday find I won't be brewing my batch. What is the best way to store it? It is currently in an Ehrlenmeyer flask with foil over the mouth. I have an orange carboy cap that would fit over it too. Should I just put it in the fridge with the cap, or...

Temperature increasing when opening the door

I have a pair of the square Better Bottles that have an indentation in the side. I can put the sensor into the indentation and have the bottles pressed up against each other forming a seal with a pocket that is the same temp as the fermenting beer. The readout doesn't change when I open the...

    Why I support my LHBS

The gauge dropped from full to near empty, which to me means I'm running on fumes. There would still be some pressure left after the liquid is gone. And yes, I recognized the difference between warm and cold on the gauge. As for those washers, the white plastic ones don't work on a taprite...

    Why I support my LHBS

Yup. The other store, Brooklyn Homebrew, closed, but I'd been going to Bitters and Esters almost since they opened anyway.

    Why I support my LHBS

That's my point really, it was showing near empty so I swapped it knowing that it was no longer at full. The other thing is that while my keg was not on gas for a week, it was actually carbonated enough to drink. I had dialed it up to 30psi for a day before the tank leaked, and I guess it...

    Why I support my LHBS

Last weekend I kegged my beer, a 9%abv IPA, and decided I better just swap the CO2 tank for a new one as the gauge said mostly empty. When I took off the regulator I noticed that the gasket on my Taprite was worn out, and wasn't the right one in the first place as I improvised when I did it...

    Dry Hop flavor/aroma absorption rate?

Hmmm. Maybe I'll keg it later today then. It's been 4 days and I won't be home over the weekend to do it. The beer has cleared up nicely too because I got an inadvertent cold crash when I put the hops in. The temps outside went down below zero F, and my house doesn't handle extreme cold very...

    Dry Hop flavor/aroma absorption rate?

I'm currently dry-hopping my IPA, using 2oz of Citra pellets in a 5 gallon batch. My question is about how long it really takes, and what kind of cycle does it go through? Is most of it absorbed in the first day? Second Day? Is is an even rate over the first X days, and then fades off...

    dry hopping absorption

That doesn't sound right at all. Imagine a 16oz bottle of coke, and the tiny 1oz bag of hops. Do you really think it could absorb all that liquid?

Hydromter reading prior to racking to secondary

Definitely get the larger carboy. I just had a 5 gallon batch explode on me when the airlock got clogged in my 6.5 gallon carboy. A 5 gallon carboy won't even give you a chance. The batch turned out great though, from 1.080 to 1.012 in 6 days, 9% abv. I've racked to a secondary to dry hop...

    First attempt...

Did you use a hydrometer before you put it into the bucket? Take a reading before you do anything else. You don't need to put it into the secondary before it is done. Where did you read that? Usually I wait until it is completely done before I secondary, and that is IF I secondary. I only...

    Wyeast 3724 temp

Quite honestly, I'd say to put this one off until summer unless you get the belt. This strain does best at very warm temps. I usually wait for the hottest week, but that means I sweat into the pot, ewwww. JK.
