Organic vs. chemical fertilizer for hops

Once your hop plants are established, all you can really do to add organic compost to them is to put the compost on the top around them right? How can you mix the compost into the soil once the hop plants are already established in the soil? From what I know, nutrients from the compost will...

    Hops and Dogs

What topic wouldn't come up over and over again on a forum? If he doesn't want to answer, than just ignore the thread and move on. No one wants to get on here and search years of posts to see if a question has already been asked before. Besides, the search function on here is useless. If no...

Way too much head from keg.

Thanks for the advice guys. I took off my beer line last night and cut a new 10ft piece of line and put that on. I put the psi up to 10 and it poured just fine.

Way too much head from keg.

Cool, that helps a lot guys. Thanks for the quick answers!

Way too much head from keg.

So I need to increase the PSI to 10, and increase the length of my line? Any idea how long the line should be? Is too long of a line a bad thing as well?

Way too much head from keg.

I have been kegging my homebrews for a while and haven't had any problems with too much head after the first glass or so. But recently I bought a 1/6 keg of beer that came from a micro brewery. What I didn't think of before is that this keg requires the American Sanke style tap instead of the...

    My dreams have come true!

Great ideas guys. There aren't many breweries that close to me here. I only go by the total wine store if we go to the city which is an hour away, but the brewery that the keg comes from is over 3 hours away. I should have more hops than I know what to do with, for free, at the end of this...

    Clean faucet after pouring beer?

Just a question about what you guys do or don't do in regards to your keg faucet after pouring a beer. After a few days mine starts to get a buildup of dried beer gunk on the end of it. I usually don't do anything about it until I get to cleaning it every now and then. Does anyone try and...

    My dreams have come true!

I have been a homebrewer for a few years now, and moved to kegging my beers about 2 years ago using corny kegs and a small kegerator made from a chest freezer. My homebrewing has been slack lately with other things going on and knowing that even when I do finally get around to making my brew it...

    Thyme garden- any good?

Was gone on a fishing trip all last week but when I got back this weekend all 4 of my rhizomes I got from Thyme Garden had sprouts. Each one has at least 2 sprouts, about 2 inches tall, and a few have 3 or 4 sprouts. Looks like I'll have 4 good hop plants.

    Thyme garden- any good?

I also received mine 2 weeks ago. 2 cascade and 2 centinnials, but for me the cascades were only about 1/2" in diameter and the centinnials were much thicker, about an inch in diameter. I dug under the mulch just a little yesterday and could see one shoot about to pop out from one of the...

    Initial care of rhizomes

I'm not concerned yet about the watering of the plant once it's sprouted, I'm just asking about the rhizome that I just planted. Just wondering if it should be kept constantly moist, sort of like you do for a seed to get it to germinate, or is it more like a plant that needs time between...

    Initial care of rhizomes

I just got my rhizomes in this past Saturday (from thyme garden) and planted them that day. I dug out a hole then mixed the dirt I dug out 50/50 with some good potting mix which gave me a nice mound to plant them in. I then put about a 2 inch layer of cypress mulch on top to help keep in the...

    No time to plan

If you're in Maryland, I would say pretty much any american hops would grow well in your area. From what I've read Cascades are pretty easy to grow almost anywhere. I'm starting some Cascade and Centinnial hops here in North Carolina. As far as growing style, there's not really a newbie way...

    Trellis Question

I just started building my first trellis this weekend. I'm going to be using metal conduit piping. For the base, I bought a 1" 10' piece and cut it in half. I then hammered the 5' piece into the ground, emptying out the dirt plugs as i went so it would be hollow inside. Then I have two 1/2"...

    Hops Life Expectancy

I'm thinking ctheis is refering to hop rhizomes. As for hops, I've heard they can lose their potency pretty fast, like weeks, so the best bet is to keep them in air tight bags in the freezer. I think they would still be good for maybe a year or so but you would rather use them up before then.

Reusing yeast and calculating pitch count

When you reuse yeast and by washing it and storing it in 4 pint jars, is it then possible to accurately calculate the amount of starter needed for a batch using one of those jars of yeast? On the pitch count calculator, you have to know how many cells of yeast you are starting with. Do people...

Spontaneous fermentation, no hops... Now what?

He said he added the specialty grains after it started fermenting. Did you boil the water that the specialty grains were steeped in though?

    Thyme garden- any good?

I ordered from there about a month ago. At first my order wouldn't go through so I emailed them. They responded in the next day and said sometimes it has issues, but the order went through the next day. Haven't gotten the rhizomes yet though as they won't come till march.
