Explaining the moon shots to SWMBO

I am 51, but SWMBO is only 37. She is reading about all the hoopla surrounding the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's setting foot on the moon and can't figure out what all the fuss is about. Now Walter Cronkite has died and she is wondering why everyone is all upset about that. Did things...

    looking for camping recipes

I'd clean them up a little with steel wool. Then rub them with shortening or cooking oil, turn on the oven to 400, bake them for a few hours. They'll be fine. When they cool, put a light layer of oil on them to keep them from rusting again.

    Selling 1970's Audio Gear

I am moving my business to a much smaller office and one of the things I am losing is a huge storage area. I'm going to have to sell or throw out a lot of stuff and one of the things I have "re-discovered" there is my old stereo system from the late 1970's. I have a receiver, a Hitachi...

Adventures in brewing, Vol. III, part 2...

Yeah, maybe the grass will be greener there this spring. Hopefully my next batch will be free from screw-ups.

Adventures in brewing, Vol. III, part 2...

I'm not really a beginner, but I'm putting this thread here because it's been almost a year since I brewed up a batch I'm really rusty. So, I brew up an American Amber Ale last weekend, and I've got the wort cooled and am pouring it into the carboy and it's getting really, really full, but...

    EdWort's Haus Pale with extract?

Duh. Ok, so maybe I should have gone back and looked myself. Thank you, though. :)

    EdWort's Haus Pale with extract?

I am currently scaling back a bit on my homebrewing operations and will be doing a lot less all grain brewing for now. EdWort's Haus Pale is my favorite homebrew, though, and I'm wondering, has anyone ever converted it to an extract version?

It's a wonder any of us survive at all

Consumer Reports finds many Americans can't resist risky behavior: Swab your ears? Survey says you're not alone - Behavior - MSNBC.com OMG! It's a good thing they didn't ask how many homebrewers drink homebrew while brewing :drunk:

How to switch windows product key number?

I re-installed Windows XP on a computer recently, using a new CD that I purchased. When I was asked for my Product Key, I used the one that came with the new CD. I forgot that the computer came with a license for XP that is taped to the side of the case. Now if I want to use the XP installation...

Linux better than XP? What the heck!?

I'd be using Linux now at work, but I cannot for the life of me get my Palm Z22 to work with it. Other than that, it does everything I need perfectly. So, I guess Windows will stay.

Linux better than XP? What the heck!?

Normally I get frustrated with Linux because when I can't get things to work all of the people who can help can only speak geek-tech-speak and not normal English. Usually, for most of the thing I do, Windows just works and Linux does not always work very easily. Last night and today, though, I...

    Stoner bands vs. redneck bands

What rock bands are really good to listen to when you have been exposed to a little of the hop plant's cousin? Which bands sound worse? For me the biggest one was Ted Nugent back in the 70's. Ordinarily, his music was just "ok" for me, but partake of a little of a certain herb and.... "wow...

    Mystery Fish ID?

Hmmm. Well, it could have simply been smoked trout. I'm not sure exactly which kind it would be. Or, possibly whitefish. We still have smoked chubs available in most stores about here, but they are only about 10-12 inches long, and, after they are smoked, the entire fish turns golden. They are...

    Steelers/Chargers Officiating a Travesty

Let me start out by saying that I don't root for either the Steelers or the Chargers and I did not bet any money on the game yesterday. That being said, the antics of the officials at the end of that game were nothing short of ludicrous. The NFL should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves.

Just picked up this notebook PC for SWMBO for $299

Sounds like an excellent deal. I just bought an Acer with a 14.1 inch screen for $419 at Office Depot. It's amazing how much cheaper- and better- these things have gotten over just a few years.

    Laptop Batteries- Aaargh!!

Whenever SWMBO gets a new laptop computer, I inherit her old one. This normally means I get a computer with a battery that's shot. It just seems to me that laptop batteries in general just suck, as does the way that the machines are designed to utilize the batteries. I just read somewhere that...

100 Skills Every Man Should Know

I can do somewhere between 81 and 90 of those things, but my question is this: if you know how to brew your own beer, do all those other things really matter?

    Question for parents of teenagers

Wow, this is all very strange to me. Guys are afraid to be nude around each other? Weird. When I was in school, and we all took showers after gym and after sports practices, the men's locker rooms all had communal shower rooms. The women's locker rooms did not. When we would go on the road for...

    Question for parents of teenagers

Our son is in 9th grade and is playing freshman football. He comes home from practice every day smelly and filthy. We asked him why he hadn't taken a shower after practice and he said that no one take a shower there. Is this normal these days? When I was in school (just after the end of the...

    Kneading Bread

How to knead by hand: 1. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and flatten slightly. 2. Using the heels of your hands, push down firmly on the dough, pushing it away from you. 3. Turn dough a quarter turn and fold half of it back towards you. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until dough is satiny and...
