Using a 1 gal jug for a yeast starter?

I routinely use a 1G glass jug for starters, but not small ones like 1L. I actually tend to use 1/2G growlers for 1L, anything bigger gets the 1G jug. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

I'm also surprised about Shea and johnson. I guess Shea should have stayed put in Dallas. Johnson was in great form in SEA. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Is my "2nd fermentation" too cool?

It's called a secondary fermentation - but it's not. It's just a clarifying step (unless it wasn't finished fermenting when you transferred, but it may have). As a clarifying step, the temp isn't so important. the cooler temp will actually hasten the clarification. When fermentation is complete...

    Northern Brewer Grains

Grains from NB are top quality. I routinely get 70% with BIAB and great flavor - but I grind my own. I suspect your grind is off. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Submersible heating element vs drilling

Also consider induction heating if it's a magnetic pot. I don't have one, but have been thinking about heading in that direction. Price is in the ball lark of the keg kits thing (cheaper) and seems a bit simpler than either drilling or the submersible unit - not problems with water - electrical...

Do you HAVE to use a Flask for yeast starter?

I like the idea of bigger, but if you want to do it right the first time I'd go 5000. You need that for lagers. That having been said, 1g growlers are more than fine and are waaaay cheaper but you have to boil in a pot. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

Kolsch is a beer where the yeast defines the style - this malt bill with 001 will be more like a blond ale, or cream ale or the like. It will be a fine beer, but not a kolsch Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

What temperature should i mash pilsner malt at?

Regardless of the malt used, for a saison you are trying to get maximum fermentability to get it dry. I would say 145-148 for 90 mins. Others will surely have other opinions. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    Eureka moment for temp control?

Greetings. I apologize if this is common knowledge and I'm just an idiot. I BIAB with a keggle set up. The biggest problem I always had was temp control during the mash. Summer or winter - it didn't matter - temp would drop at least 2-4 degrees in the first 30 mins and I'd have to refire. To...

    Sub 1.030 beers

I guess it's my insecurities, but if don't attenuate as I hope I blame process (mash temp, oxygenation, yeast handling etc) more readily than I blame the yeast strain. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

Can beer line be too long?

Juan - thanks for the thoughts. Yes, I have watched the beer in the line do this. The lines are on top of the keg, so I guess the temps might be variable. I will get a fan and see if it helps. Regarding carb method, I put this keg at 40psi for 2 days (starting when first dropped into keezer -...

Can beer line be too long?

The flow is very slow, a trickle is a good description. I don't have a fan - do you think its needed if I don't have a tower? I just coil up the lines on top of the kegs. Thanks for your help.

Can beer line be too long?

The foam shows up about half-way along the line...the line closest to the keg looks to be filled with beer. Keeping the tap open - well, I guess I'd say no since I filled a few pint glasses and the "Beer" never reaches the glas - just foam. Regarding the temp - I was wondering about that as...

Can beer line be too long?

High Carb Kegging question: I have a Dubbel kegged - on gas at 20psi (35F) for over a week (aiming for 3.5 volumes). Anticipating foam, I set up a 30ft line to a picnic tap. I get nothing but foam out - and the beer is flat. What is interesting is the foam is slow, but there is beer visible...

Is there a such thing as Mashing too long?

You certainly will risk souring if you wait too long (?days). Otherwise I think it's ok but haven't done it

    iBrewmaster2

I am an early adopter - owned ibm1 and bought ibm2 the first week it was available. I agree entirely with the complaints/concerns about the software, I just disagree with your language. No need to be rude as I'm quite sure the people on the other end of your email had no desire to make a bad...

    iBrewmaster2

I have to disagree - the original email complaint was pretty obnoxious. It comes across quite attacking without recognizing there are humans on the other side. Of course the reply is unfair as well
