    Homemade cleaner

Thanks a lot to everyone... I'll probably use unscented detergent and see how that works, thanks again!

    Homemade cleaner

No that's just the point. There isn't a homebrewing store in the island at all, so everything I need I have to order. Eventually of course I WILL order, but I was wondering if for this particular batch of beer I could use a homemade cleaner

    Homemade cleaner

Up till now I've been using Chemipro Oxi for cleaning and iodophor for sanitising but I just discovered that my supply of Chemipro has run out. Could I use iodophor for both purposes (cleaning and sanitising)? If not, is there some kind of recipe for a homemade cleaner with ingredients you can...

How does adding honey affect ABV?

So just to get this straight if I had an OG of 1.040 and then added 1lb of honey in a 5 gallon batch, the OG would pump up to 1.044, correct?

How does adding honey affect ABV?

An example: After the boil I take a hydrometer reading (OG1). After about a week in the primary I add some honey in the fermenter and take another reading (OG2). After the honey has been fermented and I measure yet again the gravity (FG). How do I calculate ABV?

Are minikegs safe to sterilize in the oven?

Hi there and thanks for an amazing site which has really opened my eyes!!! I just tried kegging with minikegs instead of bottling and I must say I liked the concept very much, no more endless hours filling 40+ bottles and so on... The only drawback is, the minikegs are hard to clean due to...

    Steeping Temperature Question

Hi all, just a quick question: From what I read here, when you steep specialty grains, you turn off the gas once the temperature reaches the desired level. If so, then won't the temperature start to drop? After 30 mins of steeping the water will have become lukewarm. What am I missing?

    Plastic mashing thermometer

Yeah you're probably right, I guess I'm just being a bit paranoid :) I'll brew my second batch on Sunday so we'll see how that goes, thanks for the input!

    Plastic mashing thermometer

Hi guys, I recently bought a mashing thermometer which is encased in plastic (http://www.brouwland.com/content/assets/photos/013/0130898.jpg) but I'm worried that the high temperature will melt/damage the plastic (or at the very least give off flavors to the wort). Is there any chance of that?

Wyeast XL Activator, does it need a starter?

My bad then. I think I will make a starter after all, better to know how to make one anyway.

Wyeast XL Activator, does it need a starter?

That's a nice calculator but I don't think it takes into account the size of the yeast pack. Wyeast XL is 125 ml instead of the standard 50 ml pack. Didn't know about the aluminum foil though, thanks for pointing that out

Wyeast XL Activator, does it need a starter?

I was wondering if I could omit the starter for a Wyeast XL since it seems like a lot of work (plus I have to buy more DME and I don't think I have a jar suitable for an airlock). I am brewing a standard 5 gallon batch and the instructions in the package state that it should be OK without a...

    Crystal malt question

Thanks for the info. Actually it's not a recipe per se, rather a guideline for beginners. Anyway the general instructions are: 6 pounds of the palest hopped malt extract available, 1 pound of 20L crystal malt (to be steeped and added to the wort), 1 ounce of Saaz hops in the last 5 minutes of...

    Crystal malt question

Hi to all, I'm thinking of trying a partial mash for the first time but I have a question (well lots of them actually but never mind:) I have a recipe for a Bohemian pils that calls for 20L crystal malt. My supplier though (www.brouwland.com) uses the EBC rating for malts which (as far as I...

    Adding sugar before 1st fermentation

Thanks for the information guys, you've been a great help!

    Adding sugar before 1st fermentation

Thanks for the quick and helpful answer. I will try your method. Just to clarify, if I did a "natural" brew with grain, hops and all that stuff instead of a kit, I wouldn't have to add any extra sugar because all the necessary sugars would come from the grains, correct?

    Adding sugar before 1st fermentation

Hi all, beginner in homebrewing here... I'd just like a thing cleared up about adding sugar before 1st fermentation. I've bought this kit for my first batch and yeah, I know it's crappy and you should avoid kits in general, but I'd like something easy to try for my first time. Anyway the...
