Help choosing hops and grains for a Brown Ale recipe

Thanks for the suggestion. Isn't that a crazy amount of hops for a brown ale? I do really like cascade and centennial so that's a definite consideration.

Help choosing hops and grains for a Brown Ale recipe

Hey guys, looking to brew a brown ale tomorrow and was wondering if I could get some input on the hops I should use. I have the following on hand: magnum chinook nugget east kent saaz cascade centennial northern brewer I've never brewed a brown before and am unsure what hops would work best...

Switching From Extract to All Grain

Definitely get a wort chiller. I built one for about $30 and I couldn't imagine brew day without one. The 6gal brew pot is pretty small but that will depend on what size batch you want to brew. The easiest and cheapest way for you to get into all grain would be BIAB. It'll cost you $20-30...

    Being broke and a homebrewer

Is pitching on top of a fresh yeast cake as easy as it sounds. For instance lets say I brew a batch and add it to my primary that I just racked beer out of would it ferment normally or would it be over pitched?

What is your go to pale ale yeast?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a temp controller on order that I'll be installing into a chest freezer. Hopefully I'll have it in a week or so and I can start brewing lagers and experimenting with different fermentation temps. For some reason none of my LHBS carry US-05. I'll see if I...

What is your go to pale ale yeast?

Hey guys, at the moment I don't have temperature control during fermentation. The carboys are in my basement and they stay around 20C. So far I've stuck with Danstar Nottingham Ale Yeast and was wondering what else I should try. I wanted to try out the Wyeast 1056 but all my LHBS are out of...

    Being broke and a homebrewer

Buy a 25kg bag of 2 row for $40 and a pound of hops for $20. It won't be the greatest beer but you can homebrew a 5 gallon SMaSH batch for about $10 plus the cost of yeast.

    Fast Brew: Grain to Glass

I also find that while you might be able to force carb it in a day or two the beer tastes better after conditioning in the keg for a week or so. I've been doing a lot of pale ales recently and I'll do primary 5-7 days, cold crash in secondary with gelatin finnings for 3 days and then transfer...

What I did for beer today

I just vacuum sealed 5lb of hops in 1oz and 2oz packages. It took 4 hours... Luckily I had homebrew and brewdogs to help pass the time.

Help me understand how a plate chiller is supposed to be setup

I have a bazooka screen inside my kettle as well so hopefully that will help. Do you go straight from kettle to primary? What do you do about the cold break material?

Help me understand how a plate chiller is supposed to be setup

I currently have an immersion chiller but it takes 25min to cool a 5 gallon batch. I can get the plate chiller for $30 so I think I'll give it a try. I guess I could have 2 carboys sanitized, collect the wort in 1, let it settle and syphon into the other carboy.

Help me understand how a plate chiller is supposed to be setup

Hey guys, I found a used plate chiller for sale cheap and am wondering how it should be set up in order to not get trub in the carboy. From my brief research it seems like the wort is taken from the kettle, put through the plate chiller and dumped into the carboy. Wouldn't this get all your...

    In Hot Water

I find it easier to hold the temp in a mash tun. I also get %85-90 efficiency lately using batch sparging.

    In Hot Water

I agree with texas, if you're only doing partial mash I would just BIAB. When you move to all grain you'll want an HLT (I use another converted Igloo cooler) to hold your sparge water. If you don't BIAB I'd use a pitcher to transfer the hot water into your mash tun.
