Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

Well... Then I think it is safe to blame you for the chaos on Sunday. :) I just decided to follow the recipe as close as I could. I would be interested in decoction for a hefe (that is my staple beer). I think this beer will turn out ok but I definitely had some doubts as my mash tun was about...

Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

Wow... that was a close one this weekend. Mash tun for the step mash was too small and had to improvise. First step @122 went fine but could not get the second step up to 149 with the boiling water. Got the idea to pull some of the mash out and dump it in a small cooler I had. Still...

    Increasing batch size w/All Grain

it sounds like you want to over shoot your gravity numbers to the point that it would require a couple gallons of top up water to hit your planned gravity.

    Douglas County, Colorado Water?

I grew up living in the Pinery (Lakeshore Drive)! Back then it was "The Pinery" and "South Pinery". Can't help you with the water unfortunately. Monument water seems to be pretty good but I haven't done an analysis on it.

Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

I decided to go with the full grain bill and mash at 1.1/lb. That gives me an extra half gallon of head space. Assuming the weather holds up, brew day will be Sunday. This recipe (DFH 90 Minute IPA clone) calls for a step Mash with a rest at 122, then up to 149. Am I going to run into...

first time 'yeast rancher' evaluate my process and give me feedback?

Why not just consolidate all your yeast into 1 mason jar instead of 10 bottles? A lot less storage. I tried yeast washing for the first time a couple months ago and now have a single mason jar that is half yeast cake (it has compacted down over the months... it used to be 3/4). When you need...

    Brewing at high altitudes

I am at 7000 feet and experience a little over a gallon per hour, but my boils are not very violent at all (turkey fryer). It's funny that this came up because I am looking to do a step mash here in the next month and all the calculators for water volumes show you how much boiling water to add...

Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

I took another look at the recipe and it was calculated for 65% efficiency... My system gets around 75%.... that should buy me some room as well. I think I will just go with a lower ratio and have a pound of dme around if i need to make any minor adjustments.

Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

I don't know if this counts as a specialty grain... but there is 1.66 pounds of amber malt, which, to my understanding is just basically toasted 2 row. 16.5 pounds of pilsner. Sounds like i could go down to 1/lb without too much effect then.

Mash Tun Too Small... What Would You Do?

I am planning on brewing the DFH 90 Minute IPA clone and ran some calculations on the rackers site to see if I can fit all the grain (18.16 lb) in my mash tun. I have a 28 quart coleman cooler and the rackers calculation said I need 7.13 gallons to make this beer. I am pondering my options and...

Ways to make my homebrew better for less

I washed yeast for the first time a couple months ago.... not as hard as you would think. Pick up some canning jars from the walmartz for $6 (you won't need all 12, but I couldn't find individual). I now have a full jar of yeast that I frequently use that is saving me $8 a batch. I followed...

    Hop replacements?

bookmarked.... and thanks. Looks like the min order is 12 oz. I don't brew that often, so how long would these keep in the fridge? Or should I freeze them?

    Hop replacements?

My brother in law wants me to brew a Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA clone and I need to order some Simcoe, Amarillo and Warrior (leaf, but would use pellet). Just about every place I look online is out of Simcoe, Amarillo or both. Could any of you suggest a replacement hop for the Simcoe and/or...

How do you enjoy your Homebrew?

For the first bottle out of a batch, I follow a pretty strict process. 1) Disrobe. 2) Turn off all overhead lighting. 3) Turn on small desk lamp. 4) Put on viking hat with the horns facing backwards. 5) Align troll dolls according to size, gender and hair color. 6) Remove glass from...

    Sploded Beer

So I tried fixing these last night. Of my split batch (26 bottles) I had 2 foam themselves empty. 12 or so were pretty flat and the other 12 has some carbonation. Clearly the priming sugar was not mixed up. I ended up putting 1/4 tsp corn sugar in each bottle thinking that each bottle had at...

Should I give up on it?

I usually dump it in the bottling bucket and rack on top to pretty good results. Did you happen to take a swig of the remaining beer in the bottling bucket? Reason I ask is that I recently bottled a peach hefeweizen (posted about this in another thread) and put the end of the racking hose into...
