You know your a beer geek when...

When you go to Bed, Bath and Beyond with your wife (or significant other) just so you can parooze the odds and ends...to determine if you can construct a better hop spider or other useful brew day tools.

Do you need a 1 off Stainless part built for your system? Let's discuss it.

Would you be able to provide a false bottom for a rectangular (cooler) mash tun?

    Big beer stuck

Also, depending on what else was fermentable in that "4# of dark grains", this may end up being terminal.

    Big beer stuck

I'm no yeast expert but I would not reuse yeast that have just completed such hard work on a very heavy wort. I would have made a starter with new and healthy yeast. They may have stalled due to health. Again, I'm not an expert but this is what I find reasonable.

legal or illegal maybe just not right

He gave away ZERO rights. Obviously he is not incarcerated and whatever he did, his debt has been paid. Seriously, what an ignorant statement to make. Maybe you like to know about new neighbors who move to your neighborhood. Who knows? Maybe you're his next door neighbor making a case for...

    Bitter recipe. Very first recipe

Those are all fairly mild hops when it comes to alpha acids. Meaning that they don't impact a huge amount of bittering. But it should make for a nice bitterish beer without being a hop bomb, that's for sure.

Where did you buy your bottle caps?

Reasons to go all grain vs extract??

Geez, I guess I'm one of the few people that has made the jump back from all grain to extract. It's a huge time commitment issue, as well as cleanup process in all grain. Since I have a young son, who gets into EVERYTHING, going extract is a huge plus. I still make very good beer without time...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Give them another 1-2 weeks. You should be able to smell significant lupulin. From the photo, the lupulin does not look like it's quite there, yet. But be patient. Post another pic next week and compare the two.

    Every brew tastes the same

Just to add my bit on fresh ingredients. I started the same way most of this community did, with 2 separate kits. I like how easy it was but it did not produce fantastic beer that I had hoped. I didn't know it at the time, but there were/are many different ways a beer can be made better...

Keeping the trub where it belongs!

I have always passed my wort through a large metal colander, the same style used for BIAB. Since I do not oxygenate my wort, it helps with integrating a little more oxygen back into the post boiled wort. However, if I lived in a perfect world, I would (should) build a hop spider. Easy to...

Can't tell from the photo but you may want to knock on that person's door and find out what the heck they used on those fellas. Those are monsters. Seriously, though...ask them. I'm impressed.

    Picnic vs Standard Metal Faucet

There are advantages to each. But here is one that hasn't been pointed out, yet. I started off with shanks. They look good and function well. But there comes a problem with portability. This is where the picnic tap wins over the shanks. If I have a BBQ, I want beer where people can access...

    Oatmeal Chocolate Stout All Grain

If you toss the powder into the secondary, you'll end up with grist in the bottom of each bottle. Been there, done that, dirty pours. Try this: Soak your cocoa nibs in vodka, 4 Tbs should do the trick. Allow it to sit for 4-5 days. Shake it up every few hours. After day 5, remove the nibs...

    Oatmeal Chocolate Stout All Grain

There shouldn't be a big difference on the flavor profile. However when you utilize the powder over the nibs, you avoid most (if not all) of the fatty lipids on the nibs. This helps increase head retention on those chocolatey stouts.

    body and carbing issues

A couple years ago, I purchased decorative bottle caps. They absolutely do not work as regular bottle caps as they are missing a vital liner that is responsible for actually sealing the bottle. I had an entire batch that didn't carb up. After realizing my issue, I was able to remedy it and I...

Chill haze, more than the norm

This is a simple pale ale I made about a month ago. The only finings I used were whirl floc and gelatin. It's just dark enough where you can't see through it but there is no noticeable material causing a disturbance. Those are the two cheapest things you can do with good results.

Chill haze, more than the norm

I use tap water off of a whole house brine filter (softener). My brews will always have chill haze unless I inject an extra step or two in order to prevent it. I have had good luck with irish moss, whirl floc, and gelatin. I chill my wort in an ice bath...usually takes 2-4 hours to cool to...
