110v Recirculating eBIAB 2.5 gallon batches

In real life, I would assume the chance of failure for a couple of resistors would be very small - it would take a huge spike or consistent usage over a long period of time. I also was curious as to why two 1kOhm resistors were used and not a single higher valued resistor. In case you can't...

110v Recirculating eBIAB 2.5 gallon batches

I understand the purpose of a fuse, I am looking for technical information. Again, I guess I am looking for information from P-J; I am curious as to the selection of resistors. If you only draw 60mA, why the 1A fuse? If the resistors go bad, they actually create an open in the circuit, reducing...

110v Recirculating eBIAB 2.5 gallon batches

Sorry, moreso interested in the resistor selection and electrical theory not just "it trips the breaker". With a 120V supply, this would result in 60mA of current to ground. Why the 1A fuse if the current will never approach this value?

110v Recirculating eBIAB 2.5 gallon batches

Are you saying this isn't the best way? I am looking for an electrical explanation of why this works. Thanks

110v Recirculating eBIAB 2.5 gallon batches

Who can explain how the E-stop in this setup works? Did I read earlier in the thread that this is specifically designed to trip the GFCI outlet itself, not just interrupt the 120V supply line inside the enclosure?

    Small Electric BIAB System Design

Hey guys, I have been brewing for a couple of years, but am looking to make some changes in the way I do things. I am currently planning on going to smaller batches (I currently do partial mashes with 4-5lbs of grain), because I don't drink my brews super quickly, and it would also enable me to...

Too much bourbon in barrel-aged stout

Has anyone ever had success after adding too much bourbon to a barrel-aged stout? I accidentally did that last year, it ended up tasting like a bourbon bomb, but I have left it in the keg for the last 12 months, and am wondering if there is any possibility the bourbon mellowed out. Obviously...

    Astringency from Partial Mash/Sparge?

I have attached 2 past water reports for my area (one file). Anything odd here?

    Astringency from Partial Mash/Sparge?

I am curious too. Maybe I will start brewing with RO water and just eliminate most of the evaluation and guess work. I would hate to keep wasting money and time on beer by using poor quality water.

    Astringency from Partial Mash/Sparge?

I have had others taste the difference. After drinking the water run through the filter, it will literally leave your mouth feeling drier than before you drank it. Likewise, the water that has not been run through the filter is 'wet' and it actually tastes refreshing. This is exactly how I...

    Astringency from Partial Mash/Sparge?

Thanks for the input. I do know that my water chemistry swings with the seasons. I am curious as to the effect of the filter; it is a granular carbon activated filter. There is a noticeable difference in the mouth feel of the treated water and the regular tap water; being, the treated water is...

    Astringency from Partial Mash/Sparge?

Hey guys, I have had an issue with what I believe to be astringency in my last couple of IPAs (doesn't seem to be excessive hop bitterness, but it leaves a real dryness on the tongue). Here is my partial mash method: 1) Preheat my mash tun (small Igloo cooler) with hottest tap water possible...

    Session IPA with grapefruit???

Hey all, I am looking for a little guidance on brewing a session IPA. I have seen some people recommend Maris Otter and some crystal for the grain bill. What do others think? I typically brew using a partial mash; do I need extract for a 4% beer? I have Cascade, Chinook, Columbus, and...

    Dry Hop Tube in Keg

I am dry hopping in my keg for the first time right now. I bought a 14" SS mesh tube that 2oz of pellet hops are sitting in. I have heard people complain about the effectiveness of using a container like this to dry hop in, as the pellets clump together and such. I am trying to avoid some of...

Counterflow Cold Break and Hop Filter

I was wondering if anyone has come up with an effective way to avoid transferring hops through a chiller, while also filtering out the resulting cold break material from using a gravity-fed counterflow chiller. I just used my custom chiller for the first time this weekend; it chilled very well...

    Partial Mash Sparging

What have people found to be the best method for batch sparging a partial mash? I typically use about 4lbs of grain in a 3 gallon cooler. I have come across two main methods: 1) Rinse the grains with 4 to 8 quarts of 170deg water with ball valve open, draining into kettle 2) Close ball valve...

    Reinforce Ball Valve

I just installed a 3-piece ball valve on my aluminum turkey frier boil kettle. The washer is on the outside of the kettle, and the nut with o-ring are in the inside. I tightened the nut as much as I could (due to tight clearances), but it is not actually contacting the inside of the kettle...

    Kettle to Counterflow Connection

How do people typically connect their kettle to their Counterflow chiller input? I am using copper pipe thread adapters to brass barbed hose connectors for my water in/out, and obviously I will just be draining the wort output end to my fermenter. I have seen fancy stainless swivel locks, but I...

    Quick Counterflow Build Help

I am switching for greater cooling efficiency and quite honestly, I think i can build a better and more polished CFC than I can an immersion chiller. I am not setup to whirlpool, so I don't really see any advantage in continuing to wait and wait and wait and stir for my immersion chiller to drop...

    Quick Counterflow Build Help

Hey all, I just bought a rubber hose to convert my immersion chiller into a counterflow chiller. I was looking for a few pieces of information: 1) Do I need special high-temp tubing to go from my kettle to the chiller inlet? 2) I don't have a pump, so what's the best way to sanitize? 3) I live...
