    Starter questions

I assume when they say 3 liquid packets of WLP 810, they mean the cell count from three packs. Even one pack in a starter is going to only slightly allow an increase in overall cell count due to it already being high. If you are making a starter, you only need one pack total, and will use the...

Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

Yeah, I also thought it was insane. When the order confirmation came to my email it reads as if it is one pair of gloves and not a dozen pairs. The website phrases it more like you get a dozen. I don't feel burned since the other sellers charge a similar price per pair, but seem to force you...

White Labs WLP773 from the vault

I think the success or failure of this yeast blend having reproduceable results is going to be based on if the saving/banking is pre versus post ferment. I can't imagine the ratios of wine and beer strains in this mix keeping steady ratios after one generation is allowed to grow naturally...

Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

Which is funny, because I do! Well....I use glass 1 gallons. But my larger vessels are all plastic.

Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

I posted this in the other recent "glass breaking" thread. These are on order for me. “PIP 18-SD385 Kut-Gard Dyneema/Steel Slabbers Gloves - Double-Sided PVC Dot Grip” ANSI Cut Level 5 “Used for sheet metal fabrication, glass handling, canning, recycling, assembly, plastic molding, metal...

White Labs WLP773 from the vault

The timing is a little crazy, but for me it doesn't matter since I plan to bank the majority of the yeast. I will probably do a one gallon test batch to see how it performs, but will make sure I have some banked for use later.

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

Success. I did a 250 mL starter from the vial, and then after about 36 hours dumped all into an 800mL without cold crashing. Let that go for about 24 hours and it was super milky and tasted completely fermented. Ended up with about 60 mL of very dense yeast after cold crashing, netting me 4...

    Frozen yeast bank question

I don't think that is possible. It is all a guessing game unless you actually take counts of known volumes under a microscope.

White Labs WLP773 from the vault

Not sure. I know mine has a couple of the "old" style tubes in their fridge. I assume those mean whatever strain they are is either from the vault or are from limited releases since as far as I know all "normal" WL yeast is sold in the new purepitch packets at this point?

keg out post has really thick top part, weird

They have great customer service and would probably send you an entire new set of posts/poppets/rings. Send them a photo.

White Labs WLP773 from the vault

Only sold to those who pre-ordered directly before it hits the total needed (before the counter gets to zero orders needed). "If" (not a sure thing) they happen to produce more than they needed for the pre-orders, they sell it to whoever asks for it first via the Yeastman portal. I'm not sure...

    Glass Carboy Excitement

U-Line has a three pack for $9. ANSI A2 cut rating is not the best, but it is not bad. https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-20703-L/Cut-Resistant-Gloves/Uline-Durarmor-Cut-Resistant-Gloves-Large A5 and higher is where you start hearing about it being good for places like "window...

    Glass Carboy Excitement

If we want to talk about precautions to take for those who use glass, a nice pair of puncture/slash resistant gloves are nice. The kind cops wear so they don't get stabbed with drug needles when searching people.

    Glass Carboy Excitement

I would add that negative pressure can be a problem just as much as positive pressure. Don't seal your glass carboy when cold crashing.

    What the heck? Pellicle?

Those photos honestly look to me like classic pellicle. Round with radiating arms.

White Labs WLP773 from the vault

If it sweetens the deal for anyone, check out what White Labs just told me when I asked about the potential need to update their FAQ to mention the new packaging versus the "old" vials. "All vault releases will actually be in vials only. Purepitch is restricted to core strains as vault is...

    WLP773 - Vault Cider Yeast!

I figure if it takes another month or two to reach order level, and then people make a starter from it at some point in the weeks/months after receiving it to increase the number of cells, no problem with an 11 month (probably more like 7-9 months between production and November) total timeline.

Brewer's Best Premium Cider Yeast only

Well assuming this is the same "Brewers Best" as I am thinking, it says the following at the bottom of their website. "LD Carlson Company 463 Portage Blvd., Kent, OH". That name should look familiar to many! Who knows what actual lab is growing/packing the yeast though.
