Does anyone here do wood turning?

Yeah, I just turned a pair of simple tap handles to replace the cheap plastic ones that have been on my kegerator for the last 15 years. I made one from Walnut for the dark beer keg and one from Alder for the light beer keg. :)

Does anyone here do wood turning?

My flying hobby is getting too expensive these days with $6+ gas, so that's why I decided to get into another hobby. I decided on wood working - specifically wood turning. I'm 66 and retired, the last time I turned wood was back in high school in '74 - I enjoyed it but that was the last time I...

    How often do you shampoo?

Every day, shampoo and conditioner. I'm 66 years old and have been doing it that way for decades. But I get very dirty, greasy, and sweaty.

    Grain Mill Recommendations

I have been using a Hull Wrecker two roller with a Makita 6302 hand drill for the last year and a half. I used a feeler gauge to adjust the rollers to .028" and use one pass milling - I am considering adjusting it to .025" just to see the results. This seems to be working great for my BIAB mash.

    Refractometer Wort Correction Factor

I put the hot or boiling drops right on the refractometer and just let it sit for a minute or two. The reading is pretty stable after that. The refractometer reads low when the sample is hot, so I just let it sit until the reading stops climbing.

    Refractometer Wort Correction Factor

I have spent a lot of time learning the use of my refractometer, it gets used for virtually all of my readings during brew day. I can't remember the last time I used my 'old school' hydrometer - probably to verify the calibration of my refractometer and Tilt hydrometer. As others have said, I...

    What are you drinking now?

I'm drinking a nice homebrewed Doppelbock coming in at a respectable 11% abv...

    Kegerator advice

Yes I do. I bought an EdgeStar dual tower kegerator 13 years ago. It has been plugged in and running all that time and it has never given me any trouble at all. The only thing that really needed to be done was changing out those the cheaper rear sealing taps with some forward sealing taps...

What book is on your nightstand? Readers!

As I'm getting older (closer to 70 now than 60), audibles are getting to be my preferred option.

    Diacetyl Rest

Yes it is. I have two tilt hydrometers and I absolutely love them! I have calibrated them against my hydrometer and I find them very accurate. They are especially handy for monitoring the SG when I'm making lagers.

    Diacetyl Rest

The most common way to do a diacetyl rest is to start it before fermentation is complete (about 5 points or so before fermentation is finished). That is how I do it anyway. I don't know what happens if you do a diacetyl rest after fermentation has finished. Here is what one of my lager...

    What are you drinking now?

I just pulled the tap on a fresh corny keg of home brewed German style Schwarzbier. And it is very tasty! :)

Using a refractometer, I am confused.

Are you inputting a wort correction value into the calculator? Since you don't have a hydrometer to calibrate your wort correcting factor, you can use a factor of 1.04 for a typical wort correction. Using a wort correction value of 1.04, an original brix of 16B, and current brix of 6.7B - I get...

    Wine chiller

I do. But mine are a bit pricy. Back in the day I was making a lot of homemade wine (I don't anymore). I had two 75 bottle wine refrigerators. After I stopped making homemade wine I decided to convert them for lagering. The chillers had a low temp of 47°F, but I wanted them to go to freezing...

Forst Dopplebock possibly/soon to be stuck fermentation?

Boy, I have a totally different opinion. I have two Tilt hydrometers that I calibrated against my hydrometer before using them. I have been using them for over a year now and they work perfectly and always agree with my hydrometer - in fact I don't even use my hydrometer anymore, I use my...

What is the ideal min and max L/kg mash ratio for BIAB with infusion mashing (no sparging)?

I agree with this, and it is exactly what I do. I BIAB with full volume and no-sparge, I use whatever water I need to in order to hit my pre-boil volume after absorption and losses - whatever the water to weight ratio turns out to be. Sometimes if I'm brewing a high gravity beer and I can't fit...

    How do you contain spills?

I brew in my garage. I just toss down a cheap Harbor Freight tarp to keep spills under control.
