English Porter Black Pearl Porter (AG)

1.015 seems awfully low for this recipe. It calls for a mash temp of 158, uses a pound of flaked oats, and users both lactose and maltodextrine.

English Porter Black Pearl Porter (AG)

Plugged this into Beersmith and I'm getting a FG of 1.031 which seems pretty sweet, especially with the low IBUs in this guy. I was thinking about kicking up the hop additions to get a bitterness ratio of around .6ish. I guess I'm looking for advice on whether to leave the recipe as is, or to...

    A Tribute to Hunahpu

I guess that's as good of an excuse as any to invest in a pH meter.

    A Tribute to Hunahpu

Peeps who have brewed this: what are you doing about your mash pH? The insane amount of roasted malts is putting my estimated pH way below the target. I'm trying to decide between cold steeping some of the dark grains (at the expense of not sqeezing out some of their sugars which has potential...

    Shock-Top clone is bitter?

I fail to see how his post criticized you at all. He apologized, then asked several process related questions to try to get to the root cause of your beer not turning out as intended.

American Amber Ale Red Wagon Oatmeal Amber

Just brewed up this recipe today. I toasted the oats @350 for 60 minutes about two weeks prior to brew day. Some sources claim that it gives the oats a cookie-like character. I also swapped out the 1272 for US-05 since I like my brews to finish a bit on the dry end of the spectrum. I'll keep...

American Amber Ale Red Wagon Oatmeal Amber

Ever tried toasting your oats before brewing this? I'm looking to brew a really biscuity/bready amber and I'm liking the look of your recipe, I was thinking the cookie character that toasted oats add would play well with the other grains. If I end up doing it, I'll be sure to let you know...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

CliffMongoloid is correct. It's the temp probe from my STC-1000 buried under a layer of foam to try and isolate the temperature as much as possible. Looks pretty rigged, but it works!

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Yeah, sadly I'm a little confined for space in my tiny fermentation fridge, due to similar lack of space in my tiny apartment. But hey, the fridge was free, and it works, so it's not too big a deal if I have to clean beer out of it every few times I brew. I need to find a larger volume...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

You weren't kidding about Notty being active. I think my blow off container needs its own blow off tube.

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Brewed this yesterday with a half lb of rice hulls, since the corona mill that I used on the grain turned 25% of it into dust and left maybe 10% un-crushed; I need to invest in a real mill. Mashed with 5 gallons @ 150, sparged with 5 gallons @ 165, collected 8.5 gallons (what the ****?) @...

    Kill yeast during bottle conditioning

After sampling Founder's Mango Magnifico I decided that I absolutely needed to try my hand at a mango beer. After poking through a lot of threads on the topic, it seems like the majority of people trying their hand at mango additions don't get much flavor, and I'm convinced it's because the...

    Group Buy in Chicago #9

Just paid, came here, saw the bit about the note. Thankfully my email address is also my name, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

    Group Buy in Chicago #9

Hey bmason, No questions here, just wanted to say thanks for putting these together. It's pretty awesome for an amateur brewer to be able to get a hold of 50lbs of 2 row for what he usually pays for an entire 5 gallon batch.

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

Yeah, I'm digging the chamber idea, but I'm in a pretty small apartment, so space is at a premium. That's why I'm hoping to find the smallest mini-fridge that will get the job done.

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

Do any of you fine gents happen to use your temp controller with a mini-fridge? If so, I'd love to know the make and model. I'm wanting to build up one of these temp control units to regulate a mini-fridge capable of holding a 6.5 gallon better bottle w/blowoff tube/bucket, and I don't have...

Teflon tape in water heater element threads

Thank you, this is what I was looking for. I knew I had the element sealed for water permeability, I just wasn't sure if there was any reason why I wouldn't want to use teflon there to prevent galling.

Teflon tape in water heater element threads

I have a gasket between the element and kettle, I was just wondering if I should apply Teflon tape in addition to that, to keep the element from galling, or if that was a no no for the water heater element.

Teflon tape in water heater element threads

Do I need Teflon tape on my water heater element threads, or do I just leave them unprotected when I thread the element into my kettle?
