I have Bell's 2 row wort, how to add specialty grains to it?

I was at Bells for the 4th annual homebrew expo yesterday and got around 6 gallons of their basic 2 row wort (as did 200 other people there). So now I have a recipe that I want to brew but want to know the best way to incorporate the other grains (aromatic, biscuit, crystal #, whatever). I was...

Newb working on an apricot melomel

An update on my apricot melomel. It's about 3 weeks shy of being a year since I made this. It has been sitting untouched in a cool dark space for several months. I just pulled it out if storage and it is finally clearing nicely. Took a small sample and the taste is very nice. Dry, slightly tart...

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

I brewed this Lemon-lime Hefe Tuesday evening. I increased the grain bill just slightly as I have not nailed down my AG efficiency yet. I used beersmith and set up for an OG of 1059, which I ended up Getting 1058. Aside from the slightly increased grain bill, I followed the recipe to the T. Made...

Review my yeast starter plan please

I made my starter at 8pm tonight. I am brewing tomorrow and anticipate being redy to pitch around 8pm, so 24 hours later. I made a 1L starter with 100 grams DME using White Labs 001 California Ale Yeast. It is on my stir plate doing its thing. Here is my question: 1) do I let it stay on the...

    need DIPA recipe advice

Cracked open my first bottle of this tonight. Huge hop aroma, mostly tropical fruit. Flavor and aroma is very pleasant, lots of hops but with a smooth malt backbone. Carbonation is ok, may need a bit more time. Not a ton of honey flavor but I think the sugar and honey both did well at drying...

    Belgian Dubbel/Dark Srong advice please

Working in Beersmith to create this Belgian Dubbel/Dark Strong recipe. A local microbrewery, Greenbush, has a brew called Isole. On their website they list the ingredients but not measurements. I used an existing Dubbel recipe from BS and made adjustments so that the grain bill has the...

    Partial mash volume question

Hey, thanks for the absorption rate help. I guess I was thinking that sparge volume was dependent on grain mash volume, not my boil volume. So will my combined runnings be "weak" due to the low volume of sparge water? Jay

    Partial mash volume question

I am planning my next batch to be a partial mash / partial boil recipe, due to my limitation of a 20qt brew pot. My mash will consist of 9 total lbs of grains. So if I go with 1.5 quarts of water for each lb that means 13.5 quarts at the start of the mash. It would seem that I would not net...

    need DIPA recipe advice

Thank you bobsbrew and inhousebrew for both of your replies. I think I will follow bobsbrew hop schedule, and I will probably use the 1 lb corn sugar and just 1lb of the honey (coming in soon after flameout). I very much appreciate the tips and suggestions. I will follow up Friday with a...

    need DIPA recipe advice

Yeah, I plugged in the Columbus at 60 min and the calc showed a large IBU, more than I care for, so dropping it to 1.5oz is what I will do. I also like the suggestion of using half the Simcoe and Citra at 10 min or less and saving the rest for dry hop. I may add some more of the Columbus and...

    need DIPA recipe advice

Thanks for the tip about the fermentables and the link to the beercalculus website. I'll plug in some data and see how things look. I have a few packets of yeast on hand, so no worries there. Regarding the late hop additions...still looking for suggestions there as well. Use all i have? Which...

    need DIPA recipe advice

I'll be brewing this Friday morning. I have the Brewers Best Double IPA kit http://www.brewersbestkits.com/pdf/New%20BB%20Recipes/1035%20Double%20IPA%20Recipe.pdf but would like to make some tweeks and additions. So at my disposal I have the following: Fermentables: 9.9 lbs light LME 1 lb...

First brew completed, Imperial Pale Ale with modifications

Flavor and aroma... The aroma is not as big as I thought it would be given that I dry hopped. However, I only used 2oz of chinook, next time will use 4oz. I am getting some nice pine resin from it. The kit came with only Columbus and the upfront bitterness is there but it fades a bit and then...

First brew completed, Imperial Pale Ale with modifications

An update on my first brew...just enjoyed my first bottle! The hop presence is there for sure, but so is the smooth malt backbone. In summary, this sat in primary vessel for 4 weeks, the last six days i dry hopped with whole cone chinook. I let it bottle condition for nearly 3 weeks before I...

    What are you drinking now?

Wednesday I had one of the best beers I've ever had. Bells did a tap takeover at The Buck in St. Joseph, MI. They had 12 taps going, and not just their staples either. The highlight was barrel aged Batch 9000. $5 for a large snifter. Amazing beer.

Bottling tomorrow, question about CO2 volume?

Tomorrow I will be bottling my beer, thread here https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/first-brew-completed-imperial-pale-ale-modifications-367793/ I have a question about the desired CO2 volume? I used this site http://www.northernbrewer.com/priming-sugar-calculator/ And based on something...

First brew completed, Imperial Pale Ale with modifications

LOL I used a couple ounces of Chinook that I picked, dried, and vacuum sealed this past fall. Smells awesome. Did you cold crash your IIPA? Jay
