Rims tube to heat pool water?

It's perfectly efficient...the question is just whether it's powerful enough. Figure like this: 1 kwh = 3413 BTUs, which will raise a bit more than 400 gallons of water 1 degree. If you've got a smallish 10k gallon pool and a 5000W element, you're looking at about 5 hours to raise the...

    Calling all Information Scientists

Here's a much more modest ambition than the one described here: start a thread and see if you can get everyone to agree on a set of terms that describe what Simcoe tastes like -- objectively, unambiguously, and exhaustively. If you can't do it (and, to be blunt, I'll bet you can't), the sheer...

    Calling all Information Scientists

In all earnestness, why I should be concerned about somebody patenting a beer ontology? It's not as if there's a right answer here. It'd just be a list of descriptors that some dude decided were important. Heck, the BeerSmith library format is a (presumably) patented beer ontology. It's not...

    Calling all Information Scientists

I understand what ontological modeling is for, but I suspect you might not appreciate the nature of the senses. Just to be clear, your goal is to create a formalization of perceptual phenomena? Have you read any of the literature on perception? There are some very basic and intractable facts...

    Calling all Information Scientists

Okay, I'll bite. I spend most of my day thinking about information ontology, so I am unbothered by the jargon when I say this: I have absolutely no idea what on god's green earth you are talking about. For example, I notice you've used the word ontology about two dozen times, and yet you...

New York NYC beer stuff for sale

Thanks to mattbeer for his sizable purchase. Still plenty of stuff left, though, good 'n cheap!

    Temp for Yeast Starter?

I'm not sure why rapid growth would result in lower unsaturated fatty acid concentrations. More to the point, if you're using nutrient (and you should be!) this shouldn't be a limiting factor for growth. I love me some JZ, but sometimes his science is kind of hinkey. In any case, most yeast...

    Hops for anxiety

20-30 drops is just over a milliliter. Man, you must be a lightweight. ;)

New York NYC beer stuff for sale

PMs sent to zacster and bigmike99. I appreciate all the interest, both here and over PM. Unfortunately, I'm just not interested in dealing with shipping, so my regrets to folks not able to make it to Manhattan.

New York NYC beer stuff for sale

Spring cleaning time, and the missus wants me to get rid of the stuff I don't use anymore. Apparently, she finds it unreasonable to dedicate half of our apartment's floorspace to beer gear. W.T.F., right? I'm in upper-Manhattan (Washington Heights, very close to the A-train). I'll hold things...

    Temp for Yeast Starter?

Nope, nothing to worry about. :mug:

    Temp for Yeast Starter?

Yeast love temps in the 80s. Most ale strains hit peak growth rates right around 90 degrees F. I'd crash the starter and dump the spent wort before you pitched it into your beer after.

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

Interesting thought! They'd be sitting in non-climate controlled storage locker for upwards of two years. I'm terrified to think what I'd find when I came back. :D

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

Fear not! This process is guaranteed to not spawn sentience. Your children, pets, and religious convictions are safe. Not much to report, I'm afraid! I just finished another batch, and the good news/bad news is that the results were essentially identical. This time I gave the beads a good solid...

MalFet's bottle washer for lazy homebrewers

I've only used PBW and StarSan, and I can only speak to my anecdotal experiences. I get a bit of foaming with the StarSan and none with the PBW, so at the very least it works for me! :mug:

    Dumped batches.

I have dumped more batches than I can recall. Double digit number of batches, certainly, and even more bottles beyond that. Most of it has been "drinkable", but there's no good reason in this beautiful world to drink mediocre beer.

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

I've done a few parallel batches in different arrangements now, though nothing comprehensive yet. In my opinion, it's much too early to be making many conclusions. :mug:
