What is the one best change you've made to upgrade your beer quality?

    1. Temperature control 2. Switching from extract to all grain biab. I don’t know why it took me so long to make the switch, only min investment, not nearly as intimidating as I thought and cheaper in the long run 3. Using liquid yeast. Well slightly unfair, switched to biab and liquid yeast...

    How much light is bad?

Aluminum foil would block all light. You could wrap it around the outside of the bucket and put some on top

Fill in the blank: I didn’t start making great beer until...

Switching from extract to all grain biab was the biggest improvement. Cost to make the switch was minimal and the cost of future brews dropped drastically vs extract. So better beer for less money.

    Mexican Lager

Thanks for the suggestions. To dry hop with zest, should the zest be soaked in vodka overnight first to sanitize it?

    Mexican Lager

Brewed a Mexican Lager using Motueka hops hoping to get some lime character out of it. The beer came out great, but lacked the lime character I was looking for. Added 1 oz at 5min. Should I have also added some as a dry hop? The recipe I used is as follows: 6.6 lbs 2-row pale malt 2.2 lbs...

    Beer question for you experts!

Find a recipe you think you can tolerate and add extra DME but keep the hops the same. It will add more sweetness and more ABV without having the extra hops to balance it, the perceived sweetness will be higher. You can also try adding non-fermentable sugars to up the sweetness (lactose is one...

First Brew Still Fermenting Away - When Is It "Done"

Is the recipe a known recipe or did you craft it yourself? If it’s a known recipe then you should know where the FG should land. Leaving the beer on the cake for 3 or so days after FG, never hurts and allows time for cleanup. At that time if your kegging you can probably go ahead. If...

    Paradise Park

Does anyone have any tips on loosely cloning this beer while adding a hair more crispness and boosting the abv to 5-5.3 https://beerconnoisseur.com/beer/urban-south-brewery/paradise-park Thanks for any input.

Cold Crash and Dry Hop Question

For cold crash, this last batch I used an S type airlock with everclear in it. To the end I attached a vinyl tube. The other side of the tube had a 10 gallon trash bag taped tightly. This was added towards the end of fermentation. To make sure I captured enough co2, I added 5 oz table sugar...

    Low Enzymatic/Cold Mash/Low alcohol beer

To get a low ABV beer, what about brewing like normal, once fermentation is over cold crash then transfer clear wort back to kettle and boil the alcohol out of it. Once cooled, add back a small amount of leftover yeast from fermenter and priming sugar. Never done this, just thinking out loud

    Hoppy Flavour and Aroma

Sometimes water chemistry can affect perceived hop flavors. Try brewing a batch using bottled spring water and see if the flavor profile changes. Just a thought. The quality of my beers got much better once I started using bottled spring water. Where I live they sell bottled water from the...

    2 liter starter

Thank you. Yes it’s on the bottom after swirling. I swirled to re-suspend to pour off a small amount to a new container as starting material for a future batch (gen 3, this batch is gen 2). I am cold crashing now, will decant 80% of the liquid and re-suspend before adding to my wort. Thanks...

Guess what I’m asking is does this look like infection.

    2 liter starter

Is the clumps at the bottom just flocked yeast? Last time I made a starter with wlp-940 I remember it being more powdered and whiter colored and less grey. Just want to make sure before pouring into my wort on Sunday. It’s at the bottom (not floating).

    Mexican Lager

My first all grain brew as well as my first attempt at crafting my own recipe (actually combined a few recipes I found online with a few tweaks). Came out remarkably good. Fermented at 52 for 7 days, brought to 63 for 2 days back down to 52 for a few days while I went out of town, then kegged...

    First all grain batch

Did a biab, I’ve never seen so much trub. It plugged my screen, I had to pull the wort off from the top using my autosiphen

    New Mill

Just got a new mill and ground 10lb of grain before I read to clean off the light coating of food grade oil by grinding 1/2 lb of grain. Do I need to throw all this out and wait for more grain to be delivered or should it be ok? Thanks
