    My first high gravity beer

That was a very interesting thread. Before this I've only ever made beers with an OG of no more than about 1.065 and even that finished at around 1.016. My other extract brews were always below 1.014. I added about half a can of LME at the start of the boil (with the flame off) for better hop...

    My first high gravity beer

I went back to the brewery to find out which yeast they gave me and it's US-05. It's been 12 days since pitching and the gravity is 1.024. I gave it a stir and increased temperature to 21C (I won't increase it any more than that) as it seems that US-05 is fairly tolerant of higher temperatures...

    Is this infected?

I bottled today, and I didn't notice any solid film on it. Also seemed to taste OK with no strange smells. Next time should I bottle after 2 weeks or something for a low gravity beer like this? OG was 1.038.

    My first high gravity beer

I've made a double NEIPA with an OG of 1.082. The brew shop was supposed to include 2 packets of US-05 but they didn't include any yeast and being a Saturday evening the only place I could get yeast was to beg for some from a brew pub. They gave me about 500mL of yeast slurry from one of their...

    Is this infected?

Thanks - I just did a reading and its met gravity at around 1.013 (temperature adjusted). So probably OK.

    Is this infected?

This is a partial mash LME bitter kit from a brew shop that I brewed nearly 4 weeks ago with US-05 yeast. I should've taken the pic before dry hopping. I'm not sure if it's an infection of some sort.

    Modding a fridge

Thanks - that advice is much appreciated. Do you think I could bend that cold plate much further without damaging it to the point of losing refrigerant? If not I suppose I'll have to shove the fermenter in there with a blowoff tube and turn the door toward the wall so it doesn't fall open due to...

Which of these burners should I buy?

I'm finally ready to buy a burner to do full boils for 23L batches (final volume that goes into fermenter). I have a 50L pot. With shipping being very expensive to NZ generally, I want to buy a decent one since shipping will cost more than the burner itself. I will use it with LPG bottles. SQ14...

    Modding a fridge

I purchased the old snack fridge from work for $20 to use as a brew fridge. I've added a plywood sheet on the bottom sitting on top of the compressor housing. I don't know much about refrigeration, but that thin white metal sheet at the top was for the ice box I think. I've had to crush it to...

    240V weldless element

With a decent gas burner costing a lot to ship over to NZ, I'm thinking of making an electric brew kettle. It's a 50L stock pot and I will be putting 23L into the fermenter so it needs to be able to boil a little more than that. Will one of these be powerful enough, especially if I insulate...

What changes and what stays the same? Making my process more efficient

Sorry, it had been maybe 7 years since I last brewed beer and until the last 2 batches, they were all pre-hopped kits before that so I've never had to do any of this. I only made spirits after that and then gave up drinking completely for 5 years before getting back into beer.

What changes and what stays the same? Making my process more efficient

Does that apply to ALL extract recipes? So I can just grab an extract recipe online and anything that is not DME/LME/hops gets steeped for 20 minutes at 70°C? Does the water volume matter that much for steeping? Do I need to add a little LME/DME to the water before adding the steeping grains?

What changes and what stays the same? Making my process more efficient

I'm quite short on time due to life commitments getting in the way, but I'd like to be able to quickly and easily brew a new extract recipe with steeping grains every weekend or 2 without having to do a bunch of research first. I see that many recipes don't have any instructions (even if they...

    Local brew shop extract kit

I should've been more clear sorry! The gas burner I had was terrible and couldn't reliably ignite so I had to do a quick change of plans and use a smaller pot to do a stovetop boil. It was just 1 brew that I did.

    Local brew shop extract kit

It came with a bag of "Gladfield malt". Not sure what kind...it looked and felt like it weighed maybe 1KG. It also came with 2 cans of 1.7KG LME each (for 3.4KG total LME) as well as 500G DME. I chose the "recipe" out of a book of different styles they had. I followed the instructions and...

Help me with this crappy LPG burner

I just paid a silly amount of money for a new LPG burner as I've been searching for months for one in NZ but the options are extremely limited so I bought this heap of junk https://campmaster.co.nz/product/campmaster-4-ring-gas-frame-ring-burner-with-qcc-regulator/ I can't even fit the spacers...

    Local brew shop extract kit

I just picked up my first brew kit that is not a no-boil variety. I plan on doing a full boil, not a partial one like the instructions state for better quality. I also find the 60 minute steeping to be quite long instead of the usual 20 minute from what I've read. Opinions? Instructions...

My first brew that's not pre-hopped LME

I've done quite a few pre-hopped LME + DME no boil brews (some with dry hopping) in the past but I've finally bought a brew pot etc so I can do a boil. I want a few simple recipe ideas with a relatively short conditioning time in the 4-6% ABV range. I've seen quite a few recipes that look very...

How do you transport your bottled beer for social occasions?

I don't have a keg, nor space in the fridge for one so I bottle condition. With the exceptions of say, a hefeweizen that's generally drunk cloudy, what's the best way to carry beer to a friend's house to drink that day/night without having to leave it in the fridge for the yeast to settle...

Can I safely run this burner off a 9KG LPG bottle?

What kind of element did you use? Was it just an element added to your brew pot?
