FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

Question, I had a house fire and my aluminum pots were very close to the fire, they are not deformed yet they are a bit scorched. Since Aluminum is porous, it would have absorbed a ton of soot and I'm wondering if this will impart off flavors to my beer? Insurance is paying to replace what...

    Need a recipe critique

Thanks guys, insurance is covering the replacement of everything I lost so I get to rebuild my system from the start. Just now trying to decide on an HLT and BK since I should be able to afford more. Probably going to stick with a Coleman Extreme for a Mash Tun unless there's a better option.

Fire Loss of all brewing equipment!

While grinding the welds to my new brew sculpture, the sparks ignited some flammable materials in my garage and I had a pretty good fire (not the marshmallow roasting kind!). All of my brewing equipment is toast, literally! And I had collected quite a bit. Luckily I'm fully ensured and...

    Need a recipe critique

Thanks for the replies but I had a fire in my garage over the weekend and lost all of my brewing equipment, it will be a while before I'm back in action!

    Need a recipe critique

I'm planning my first batch of all grain and haven't quite decided what to brew but am leaning towards an Oatmeal-Milk Stout or a Wheat beer with some kind of fruit. My equipment will net me a 10+ gallon batch. I was playing with Brewer's Friend Recipe calculator (still trying to figure...

Is this viable for a chiller?

Thanks Minbari (love the B5 reference!), I'm just starting to put together all the equipment for All Grain brewing and didn't even look into HERMs systems because I was going with a gravity system. Guess I need to do some research on HERMs to see how I can incorporate that into my setup.

Is this viable for a chiller?

Why not put a regular immersion chiller in a bucket of ice water and pump the wort through the chiller and back into the BK? This seems more efficient than running cold tap water through the chiller and manually moving the chiller around the wort. I own a small immersion chiller but am...

    Sippin' tequila

I consider myself well studied in Tequila and there are many out there that are good. There is a huge difference between tequila that you sip to enjoy the flavor, shoot to enjoy the rush and mix to enjoy the cocktail. Patron, Cabo Wabo, and the famous brands are just passable as far as...

Can I get by with 20/13/20 for 10 gallon batches?

I'm moving to all grain and currently designing my system and brew sculpture. Eventually I will be brewing 10 gallon batches and I've read quite a lot regarding kettle size. I had planned to purchase 2-20 gal. kettles for my HLT and BK but already have a 13 gal. Mash Tun (cooler) and wasn't...

52 Quart Coleman Extreme on sale

I'm venturing into all grain so just now starting to collect items. I have a second burner sitting around doing nothing so I'd like to find another pot or old keg I can convert into a strike water HLT, craigslist hasn't been too helpful. Ordered the cooler kit from Bargain Fittings after I...

52 Quart Coleman Extreme on sale

I've been doing some research to build a mash tun and had decided on the Coleman Extreme 52 Quart. Most of my online and local searches netted the cheapest price of $42 at Wally World. Sears now has these on sale online for $27 with free in store pickup. Thought it was a good deal and worth...

    Newbie cider sweetening question

I took a sample and tried sweetening it with Splenda and stevia and hated the aftertaste. So, I want to stay away from artificial sweeteners. I'm not sure how to pasteurize it but I think it's just heating the bottled cider to a specific temp? I read somewhere that someone used their...

    Newbie cider sweetening question

I got a great deal a couple of months back on some fresh orchard cider and decided to make a batch of hard cider. I did not kill the wild yeast but just put it in a glass carboy and pitched the cider yeast at 72 degrees. My OG was 1.061 and it got down to .098 when I transferred it to a...
