Can I do a full 5 gallon boil?

I've done a few 5 gal boils in this kettle and its been ok. I can get a good rolling boil on my gas range, but it I've not had any boil over issues. Knock on wood. I also use a copper coil wort chiller. It cools the 5 gal down pretty quickly. I figured I would have better saturation and...

Can I do a full 5 gallon boil?

I have a 6 gallon stainless pot. All of the kit instructions state to boil 2.5 gallons and add the remaining 2.5 gallons to the finished wort. Even some of the books I have state to only do 2.5-3 gallon boil. Is there anything wrong doing a full 5 gal boil? Does it affect the hop addition...

Changing lines over to EVABarrier question

I had about 8' of PVC tubing for the beer line in my kegerator. I get a perfect pour. I heard that the internal resistance in EVA is less, thus requiring less tubing. Anyone have any experience with this?

Can you use a conical fermenter that is not airtight?

I have on open ear for tips on the boil. I boil the full 5 gal in my 6 gal pot. I boil on the gas stove top and can get a nice rolling boil going with this set up. In the past, I've wrapped the seal with electrical tape. It's pretty damn close to air tight. And yes, everything is super...

Proper time and temp in primary fermenter?

That's kinda what I was shooting for. An American light. This just tastes more like a diluted pale ale. A lot of my extract brews taste similar. I have a nice size kegerator now so I'll try my hand at lagering.

Can you use a conical fermenter that is not airtight?

Its more 30% fails, in my eyes. Somewhat drinkable, but not what I liked and would not serve to friends. Cleanliness is next to godliness. Everything I do is properly cleaned/sanitized. I just question this because all conical fermenters I see are sealed. Some are even pressurized. The...

Can you use a conical fermenter that is not airtight?

I have an older MiniBrew 7gal conical fermenter that I just resurrected. The top is just a rubber cap that stretches over the opening. Its tight but not airtight. Ive ran at least 10 brews through this unit with about 70% success. I've always thought that this can be a weak point for...

Proper time and temp in primary fermenter?

I know what you mean. I'm letting my own experience with the conical conflict with instructions, but I still followed them. The instructions appear to say that once you reach FG, transfer to a secondary ferm. Mine was done fermenting at around 5 days. At around 7 days, I dumped the trub, and...

Proper time and temp in primary fermenter?

I'm brewing from a American Light kit with dry yeast. I'm not crazy how it tastes. Doesn't have much flavor. I followed the instructions. Two things I'm a little fuzzy on. How long after the fermentation is complete(mine took about 5 days), do I let it sit in the conical fermenter? I don't...

Edgestar KC1000 kegerator temp regulating issue

Hi all. My kegerator flucturates from 36* to 41* over the coarse of 40min. Seems like all of these cheap mini fridge units are like this. Is there a fix to get this to be more stable? Maybe an external temp control or an internal adjustment?

    Chest Freezer Specs and Layouts

I have no experience with chest freezers, but I'm just wondering how you get everything to not freeze up? Can the thermostat be set to above 32*.

Keg post question for force carb

I currentley have my gas line hooked up to its normal "in" post while I'm carbonating my beer. Now I'm reading that I should have retrofitted it to connect the gas to the internal draw tube so it carbonates from the bottom up. Does it really matter? I'm doing the low & slow method using the chart.

    Cold crashing question

Thanks all. I did a pretty good job of filtering, before I put the wort in the conical, so when I transferred the beer into the keg, it was pretty clear already. Like Odie said, the first pint will be filled with some sediment but that's ok. I'll drink it anyway.

    Star San question

I understand that Star San is a no rinse sanitizer, but isn't anyone concerned about the chemical residue left behind from this? I'm watching videos of people spaying there equipment down with this solution and introducing the beer direclty afterward. I dont want this in my beer. If you pull...

    Cold crashing question

I'm doing a light ale right now. It's kegging time and I've read many posts here about the benefits of cold crashing in the fridge for a day, before kegging. I understand the benefits of it. My question is, is there any difference in just transferring the beer from the conical to the keg and...

Storing in kegerator after slow force carbonation

I'm venturing into kegging in a 5 gal corny this weekend. I have a kegerator that I'll be storing it in. My question is, after around two weeks of slow carbonation at around 12psi, how do you assure that it doesn't over carbonate? You have to keep operating pressure for it to pour from the...

    Secondary fermentation in conical fermenter

Im brewing an American Light from Brewers Best. The instructions have you ferment for up to a week and secondary for two weeks. I had this in the conical fermenter since 9/10. Maybe I will keg on 9/25.

    I'm resurrecting the old equipment

Not new to the forums, as I was here many years ago, but I just dusted off the old equipment and started brewing again. I knew John Palmers "How to Brew" book like the back of my hand, but I forgot so much. Hopefully with this forums' help, I can get back into the swing of things.

    Secondary fermentation in conical fermenter

After taking a 15 year break from brewing, I resurrected my 7gal conical fermenter, and boiled up a batch of American Light. I'm a little rusty with timing and procedure. After 4 days of a healthy fermentation, I dumped about a cup of trub. Everything looks great. If I remember correctly, I...
