    Red X malt

Good timing. I took this picture earlier today. It is an IPA with mostly pilsner and red x (super tasty). Here is the grain bill: I'll post the full recipe over in the recipe section later tonight because it came out really tasty. First IPA of my own design that is worth sharing. It...

    Homebrew podcasts

I recently started listening to "Come and Brew it" and really enjoy it. The BN stuff has way too many commercials to be listenable for me. Beersmith & Basic Brewing are both great, depending on the topic. Come and brew it has a more laid back style than any of the others and covers good topics.

When to Add Lactose to beer

The Left Hand milk stout clone I plan on trying soon calls for 1lb in a 5 gallon batch.

Adding coffee to keg after carbonation?

This is probably not necessary in your situation, but it was kind of fun if you feel like trying. I put my liquid in a 2L soda bottle and topped it with a carbacap, then purged it. Once purged I filled it with ~40psi CO2 and hooked it to the gas post with a jumper. All of the liquid went in...

    Alternative to Barrel Aging

I have done what you speak of. Works fine if you are going for the whiskey flavor but not the oak. For "oaking" I keep oak chips in a quart jar filled with whiskey. I just add the whiskey to the beer until I like the taste, no fiddling with wondering how long to leave the oak in. I also...

    Electromechanical kegerator

My current practice is swapping a single picnic line between kegs, so I'm used to purging it (or not caring for similar styles). i don't think I'd mind the extra tubing, so I'd eliminate as much as possible. My 6ft picnic line holds half a mouthful of beer (measured very scientifically) so I...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Oh, and a tip for adding the gelatin under pressure if interested - I put the gelatin in a soda bottle, put a carbacap on the soda bottle and pressurized it too about 50psi, then used a jumper from the soda bottle to the keg gas post. I had to squeeze the last little bit out, but it really...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Last night we floated the keg of my first pressure fermentation. Yeast pitched on 12/12, transferred to serving keg on 12/22, floated keg with help from family & friends on 12/24. So nice already having it carbed up and doing the transfer was a breeze. It was a good beer to drink fresh, but...

    How Hot?

I have a warped racking arm from my auto siphon that suggests against it. I haven't done that hot of water through the entire auto siphon, just the racking arm part, but if yours is the same as mine I would guess that the siphon body would fare even worse.

Oh, and I just noticed the lights indicating which beer is selected. very cool.

    Electromechanical kegerator

That is awesome. I love the "no digital electronics" requirement. Wiring stuff up "old school" with switches, knobs, and pots is a blast. If you made changes with the goal of reducing the amount that needs to be purged when switching kegs, how small of an amount do you think you could get to?

    Storage question.

My wife uses half gallon mason jars for hers. They are cheap to get a case of them at wal-mart (less than 20 bucks for 6 of them) and have plenty of other uses too. They have a reasonable footprint to work around in the fridge. She bought the one piece plastic lids for them too. I think she...

Help: Steam Kettle False Bottom Options

Instead of a false bottom, you could just get a big BIAB bag. That's what I use in my igloo mash tun. Clear wort and easy cleanup. That would save you from worrying about any modifications on the inside of the kettle. Though you could probably get away with a with a flat piece of...

Extra aeration impact on final ABV?

You are correct about the differences between ABV produced during aerobic & anaerobic fermentation, but there is the fabulous third scenario - The Crabtree Effect. Aerobic Fermentation produces ethanol if in the presence of a significant concentration of glucose (i.e. wort)...

How much sugar does carbonation consume?

Also, there is this calculator which should do what you want. Ignore the "priming method" section and just look at the table below it. You can tweak your current gravity numbers to see how much carbonation would be there at different levels. I still need to figure out the formula for this for...
