20g Spike Kettle for 6g batches

So I've read through a bunch of the other threads on this topic but want to get some additional thoughts if possible. I'm considering buying a 20g Spike boil kettle. I typically do 6g batches into the fermenter which require a bit over 8g boils. I wouldn't mind having the ability to do a 10-12g...

    SMaSH IPA or single hop

Just wanted to get some current thoughts on whether people feel it's worth brewing a true SMaSH IPA or a more traditional IPA grain bill with just a single hop. I'm planning on brewing a single hop IPA with Simcoe next weekend. Considering brewing a true SMaSH with Maris Otter / Simcoe but...

5 lb CO2 tank empties too fast

Just got the tank filled. Had the regulator set to 24 PSI and turned it off. Over about 24 hours it dropped down to 20 PSI. Obviously the pressure is leaking somewhere for the regulator to drop but only 4 PSI over 24 hours doesn't seem to indicate there is a significant leak. Anyway, it's save...

IPA recipe troubleshooting? Old hops to blame?

Thanks for the responses. I’ve also wondered if the hopping schedule was light but the judging comments included questions of the age. Water profile for this was about 160 sulfate. I think chloride around 50. As far as oxygen this was the first beer that I cold crashed and transferred both...

IPA recipe troubleshooting? Old hops to blame?

So I recently brewed what I was hoping to be a traditional American IPA. I had previously brewed a Rye IPA with a similar recipe and hop schedule that I thought came out well and received a respectable score in a competition of a 34. The comments for this American IPA (same as rye but...

SS Brewtech Brew Bucket Racking Arm Modification

When pulling a sample of a saison that is near the end of fermentation, the racking arm was positioned within the level of the trub/yeast that has flocculated at this point. When opening the valve, there was a slight hesitation before some yeast came out. It made me wonder if anyone has used a...

Spike Bargain Cave Updated - 30+ Items!!

Just curious, when the bargain cave says that the item is not currently available, is that because it has already been sold or at some point will it become available to be purchased?

5 lb CO2 tank empties too fast

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to fill the tank before the next brew day to make sure I have it to apply CO2 while cold crashing and pressure transfer. It's possible that it's leaking from the lid of the SS Brew Bucket but from what I've seen people have commented that the domed lid is...

5 lb CO2 tank empties too fast

I have a spare 5 lb tank that I bought used along with a Kegco single output regulator. The tank looks to be in great shape and relatively new. I don't use this tank to serve kegs in the keezer as I have a 20 lb tank which has lasted almost a year now and counting. This 20 lb tank has...

Difference between cold crash and just moving to cold keg?

Completely disagree. Since getting a brew bucket I cold crashed attached to CO2. Was able to use a pressure transfer through the out of the keg without any hop material clogging on a highly dry hopped beer. I thought this was a pretty great result of cold crashing.

Slow activity in airlock after 36 hours Wyeast 1272

I just brewed an ipa with 1272 and it fermented down to FG within 3 days. No blow off but the blow off jar was active within 12 hours of pitching. I’d take a gravity reading if you can.

When do you take your first hydrometer reading during fermentation?

Since using a brew bucket I take one within the first four days. The last two beers I’ve brewed have hit FG within 2-4 days of pitching a starter. That’s with 1272 and 1968. Typically let it sit for around 2 weeks before cold crashing but I like tracking the progress and using a refractometer...

Brew Bucket owners - What Mini Fridge are you using ?

I converted an older small GE mini fridge that was left in the house when we purchased it. I had to cut the inside of the door apart to remove the shelving but the brew bucket fits in there nicely. I added the domed lid with a 3" TC 90 blow off barb. I use this for blow off every beer and I also...

    Question about yeast starters...

Depends on the yeast strain too. If you’re using an active Belgian yeast you will get blow off in a fermonster. With wyeast 3787 and 3944 I’ve had significant blow off with a fermonster.

    Brewing with Coffee

Been looking through Zymurgy online as I'm going to brew an Oatmeal Stout with coffee. Seems like the thing to do might be to cold brew some coffee by letting some coarsely ground beans steep in cold water for about a day and then adding that to the keg prior to filling. This supposedly provides...

    SS Brew Bucket Modifications

When I was looking into the cost of everything it started to add up close to what a spike CF5 would cost. Reason I still went with the brew bucket is because it fits in my fermentation fridge.

    SS Brew Bucket Modifications

I just posted a similar question about a week ago. I'd be curious to see the results if you go about doing it and what it ends up costing.

Cheapest place to purchase hops ?

I recently brewed a 6 gallon Rye IPA for the second time with a .75 oz bittering charge of Magnum and then 3 oz of Mosaic/El Dorado mix at flameout and another 3 oz dry hop. The competition results were all positive saying overall a great tasting beer, just not enough hops for the style. I...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

Yeah I went that route last night and sent an email to try and get the dimensions. At this point I don’t see the need to ferment multiple batches at a time so I’d like to just stick with my current fermentation chamber. Worst case I’ll just get the domed lid and have a 3” TC modded to include a...
