    What size batch?

If you are inexperienced, start w/ 2.5 gallons and work up to your comfort level. While a 5 gallon batch is possible with a few work around like sparking, topping up the kettle w wort during the boil, and even topping up the fermenter, that’s not wise for the first time around the track w/...

Converting Extract Recipes to BIAB / All-Grain

Typically extracts contain some amount of specialty grains. Best to find the Maltster data sheet for the specific extract. Below is an example of Briess Pilsen DME. Only contains 1% carapils fwiw http://www.brewingwithbriess.com/Assets/PDFs/Briess_PISB_CBWPilsenLightDME.pdf

Bits of grain floating in first BIAB brew?

I think the sediment will sink in your keg.... Rdwhahb

    Deer Grambel

Frankly, I find the pergola far more impressive! jk....I have used those type block and tackle multiple pulley hoists for years doing many things from hoisting engines to storing small boats. They work amazingly well, you’re doing good! I do prefer a ratchet pulley for BIAB, as you can remove...

Buying a new Spike+ 15 gallon kettle. Should I add a port for a temp probe?

You could always do a step mash with a boiling water infusion or decoction, Personel preference I guess, Some of these kettles have so many ports they look space age tech :) Not my preference lol

    Would this work/First 10G Batch

Couple “work arounds” for maxing out a kettle that I’ve found helpful... At the end of the mash rest, top up the kettle w water near the rim, this is helpful as it is difficult to mash in close to the rim, but easy to “flood” the kettle after the mash.... Pull the bag and while hanging over...

I ship to Europe for $10 additional...I think shipping times are 7-10 days, but can vary depending on customs at the receiving country..... Shameless plug :) thanks wilser

What are the disadvantages of brewing small batches on a larger system

Keeping temps stable during the mash gets easier as batch size increases. I would stove top a gallon batch and put it in a warm oven during the mash rest.

    First BIAB Plan

With small batch brewing, boil off is a much larger percentage of the total boil volume, knowing this, I would “plan” on monitoring your volume during the boil and make adjustments as needed such as increasing or decreasing boil vigor, or even extending the boil time and adding late hops timed...

    Brew in a basket (hooks)

I would skiip the hooks and the wire rack and use a double ratcheting pulley. Far better then the other options imo. you will need a simple overhead attachment point...

Survey: Lets hear why you prefer Propane over Electric Brewing

Ok you are either going w a 25 gallon pot propane fired, or an electric 7.5 gallon Mash and Boil system. your two choices couldn’t be further apart lol. you do realize how huge a 25 gallon pot is? I would find a 20-25 gallon pot inconveniently large for 5 gallon batches.

    Contemplating 1/2 bbl BIAB

I’ve done about 8-10, 1/2B batches and have concluded that mash temps remain very stable due to the mass of liquor and grist. Outdoors in a Wisconsin winter may be different, but with reasonable ambient temps, I feel mash temps are very steady for large batch BIAB and implementing sophisticated...

brewing with brown rice - gelatinizing?

When I have used rices I cooked the heck out of it before adding to the mash....watch your water volumes As the cooled rice holds a lot of water.

Punching hole in bag for kettle side return port

Ok Poly voile fabric doesn’t tear that easily like typical other fabrics....but may stretch and deform a bit when cut 45 degrees to the weave direction when cutting a circle. a slit would be much easier to repair if the results aren’t to your liking lol :)

Punching hole in bag for kettle side return port

If your ports are at the top of the kettle, above the mash liquid level, I suggest a slit in the bag that can be cinched up underneath the port or ports. simpler and more practical than cutting a hole. good advice above, heat seal the cut edge w/ very gentle flame close to fabric.

Is my fly sparge a waste of time? Need help and common sense!

While I agree, it does seem intuitive that it would take some amount of time for the sugar to equilibrate from the grain to sparge water during a batch sparge, however Denny Conn, a well respected pioneer of the batch sparge process found that the time to equilibrate was about the time it takes...
