    Why are controllers so expensive?

Guys, if you want a cheap controller, they are available if you look in the right place (not referring to the controllers I build). However, I'm a guy that builds controllers on the side, and I can say that most of these vendors aren't really overcharging, they just don't want to work for free...

    Post pics of your smoker

Here's my smokehouse. It's fully electric with a 3000w oven element for cooking and an electric smoke generator made out of a cast iron pan and hotplate on the bottom. I built the controller myself, and it controls smokehouse temp, monitors meat temp (automatically shuts itself down when...

    Sausage Casing Questions

My local abbitoir charges $35 a hank for fresh hog casings, I store them in heavily salted water in an icecream pail in the beer kegerator.

Need help with LED indicator problem.

The other side of the element circuit is still live and it's backfeeding the LED. The SSR is letting enough enough leakage current through to light it dimly. You could do what I do and put a low voltage indicator on the control side of the circuit. It will indicate wether the control...

Do they make a temp controller that will automatically ramp up temp?

Auber Instruments makes one for 60-70$ I believe. It's got full ramp soak options on it.

    Im Going Electric!

Once these get popular here, these threads will be much easier to answer. Variable control, with a potentiometer, and this component http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Solid-State-Relay-SSR-40A-40VA-AC-24-380V-Heat-sink-/150850069104?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231f5d6270

    Phase Angle Controller

I know the guy that builds those, and he's a decent fella. For a basic variable control that's pre built I'd recommend him, it's good for a single element control. If you want to step up to more advanced controls that will manage higher level control of the brewing process, you can look into...

    Phase Angle Controller

The only shortfall is if you want to control multiple elements or have individual element control. These are well suited to a single element, but once you start running say two 4500's in a BK, then you would need to get a little creative with your wiring. For my larger control panels, I use...

    Phase Angle Controller

All you need is one of these http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=ssr+40+va&_sacat=0&_odkw=ss+va+r&_osacat=0 And a potentiometer. It is NOT a typical ssr, it's a modular phase angle control unit. All you need to do is hook the potentiometer across the control outputs, and the ac hot through...

Router Speed Control to Adjust Temperature

The router speed controllers are usually a Phase Angle style of controller, and they DO reduce amperage draw. The heat you feel is not from a resistor, it's the switching circuitry. Like any electronic circuit, heat is developed when it changes state (ON/OFF). You can use it no problem, and...

    Brew Kettle Controller

This is about as cheap as it gets. You can make a phase angle controller with a "SSR-VA" type ssr and a potentiometer. There's a pretty good writeup on how to build one here http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=933

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

I built this a while ago. Everything from scratch, including the rollers. 3" x 7" rollers, 1/2 HP furnace motor. I had to reduce the feed slot because the motor didn't have enough power, hence the red plastic baffles in the video in the link. Mill in action

    PID and PWM?

Using a 2.2uF cap in this one will give roughly a 1 second cycle time. If you use an electrolytic cap that is polarized be sure it's installed with the polarity correct or else it wont work. I've used mine for quite some time now successfully.

    PID and PWM?

This one works, just change out the C1 cap for a 2.2 uF. It'll do 5-95% then, for full boil put in a bypass switch... replace DOT with a "." as I'm not sure about posting links here as a newb. I've used several of these, and they are great. It's based on the 804? kit I think... www DOT...

Variable resistance SSR for boil control?

These are known as phase angle control modules and they are available from ebay for less than 20$ per unit. Search "ssr-va" or "ssr voltage resistance" on ebay, the result will be a unit like this. It works on the basis of phase angle control...

    Greetings from MB Canada

Hello all, I have been following this forum for a few months and learned alot. On the advice/thread info here, I've begun my own electric build based on 2 PID's, 2 25a SSR's and 2 4500w elemen ts and a PWM variable temp controller. Up until this point, I've only done kit/malt extract beer...
