The reading are useful to let you know when primary fermentation is done and to determine alcohol content.

    Hydrometer - Need help urgently

It should be ok to open it for a quick check, just make sure you keep everything clean and don't let the cat fall in. :D

Just put a batch in the bottles

Had a nice pleasant smell, but I had to call one of my friends who brews to ask about the taste. It tasted like jet fuel, he laughed and said he has had a couple like that and after a little aging they came out to be great beers. Sounds strange to me but a lot of chemistry is going on in there I...

    Keg into Brewpot Help

Find a friend with a plasma cutter or a weld shop. If you need fittings, that would be the time to do it, although some do not like welded fittings. If it is going to be a boil pot then the welds should not be an issue.

    Hello from Australia

Greetings. Do they allow the making of spirits, whiskey and such in .au, seems I heard that somewhere. Not exactly permitted here in .us but I would like to try it someday.

    Hello all.

I read about the sanitary weld and it just doesn't work for me. When you boil in that pot it will be sterilized weld or not. I think that whole weld issue is overblown. It might be an issue in a fermentor or secondary, but I question just how much of a risk it is. Then again, I make a living...

    Stainless Steel Fermenter

That sucks. Most any dissimilar metals will setup a galvanic cell when placed in a fluid, you had 3 metals and the zinc acted as the sacrificial anode in the circuit. That is why we use 'zincs' on boats to avoid having the aluminum and brass destroyed by the stainless. When in doubt stick to...

    Ahhh, now that's good

I just used the extract, didn't add anything. The nut flavor is subtle but present. If you really want the nut taste to be noticable you need to add some.

Is that mold in my beer?

The taste isn't medicinal or tangy or sour so I'm going to let it run the course and see what I see. I showed this pic to a friend who is quite experienced and he commented that it looked like the krausen had just fallen and that was all yeast debris that would fall out in a few days.

Is that mold in my beer?

I just opened the pail to test SG and found this: I'm thinking this can't be good. It has been in the primary for a week, the OG was 1.044 and it is now 1.013. Smells ok and the taste is a bit bitter but no nasty taste or smell. Is this ruined?

    All Apple cider

We had a cider press on the farm I grew up on. Essentially all it did was grind the apples then drop them into burlap sacks which were pressed at about 1500 pounds to extract the juice the add a little sugar. We used to produce about 500 gallons a run and when we wanted it hard we did not add...

Now this has to produce something truly evil to drink

EZ Cap brewing Just 5 EZ Steps!: 1) Pour fruit juice into a rinsed-out plastic soda-pop bottle. (2 liter bottles work GREAT) 2) Add the premium yeast (enough supplied in the EZ Caps kit for about 100 liters!) 3) Screw on the reusable, patented EZ Cap. 4) Wait 2-7 days. 5)...

    Ahhh, now that's good

Just cracked the first bottle from a batch of English Nut Brown Ale I bottled about a month ago. Nice hops smell and pretty good but still needs a bit more time to cold condition. Several will be sacrificed to my thirst tonight. :D

    Rube style secondary

If one did not have a secondary and could not get one in time, and assuming proper sanitation was used, and proper technique was employeed to prevent splashing. Could one siphon the primary to the bottling bucket, clean and resanitize the primary and then put the beer back into the primary to...

    Bottle labels off...

I have found that ammonia or bleach work pretty well with hot water. Not at the same time of course.
