ice-melt cable wrapped around a mash tun?

the Tyco stuff seems more promising but i cant find it for sale anywhere which makes me think it is pretty pricy.... these seem like they could do the job and fairly affordable http://www.omega.com/Heaters/pdf/SRMU_HEATER.pdf the 12inch round could put out ~1.2KW and you could put 2 or 3 of...

    Higher than expected OG

Is this a 5 gallon batch or a 6 gallon batch??? did you account for the boil off of a 90min boil. most times a higher than expected OG is usually due to less water than was expected in extract brewing. that being said i just put you grain bill into iBrewmaster and it is saying an og came out...

    One mash, two boils?

i was thinking of doing something fairly similar.... I am looking to really refine my stout recipe so my plan is to do a 10g mash with the base recipe that I have and do 3 3.3(ish)g boils but ferment them all separately.... that way I can play with hop schedules, different yeasts, spices, ect...

    Bottle sanitizing question

i do this all the time and have never had an issue the key is to make sure your bottles are clean (no gunk in them). put them all in the dishwasher with the "heat dry" setting on (the important part) and run it with no soap or detergent. if i am going to bottle that night i just load them up...

    LED Lighting Question

I would need to see a picture of the break itself to really tell you if you could fix it. most of those rope lights have thin copper traces that run through them connecting all the elements. Depending on what the break looks like you could solder them back together and be in business but i...

am I overloading my 15 amp breaker

I am an Electrical Engineer and I have to say the NEC differs with you greatly here. For circuits under a continuous load you should not size the circuit for more than 80% of the breaker size. I have designed equipment for the charging of electric cars that run at 32 amps and guess what they...

Battery powered heat source for ferm chamber?

the amount of energy needed to heat the space is going to be a function of the size of the space and how well insulated it is..... A small space that is very very very well insulated would not require a huge amount of energy but that being said we are not talking about 2 AA batteries ether. I...

    Brutus Build # pick one

one on the sheet is 40VA holding current. It is key to note VA is not the same as A. this stands for "Volt Amps" and and for DC is the same as watts so if fairly pointless for DC but is commonly use to reference "power" in the AC world because it takes into account the "power factor" i don't...

    Brutus Build # pick one

The link you provided stated the valve takes 6.1W. So that would be 120*A=6.1. Witch would equal .050A or 50mA

    Brutus Build # pick one

A valve that takes 40A!!!! i think you got something wrong here i cant imagine a valve taking nearly that much. are you sure it is not 40mA???? post the specs or exact model you are using... ether you are mistaken on the 40A or you are using some crazy valve

    Heating system

you don't really need an electric range. take a look at the electric brewing threads. you can build an electric setup using water heater elements. they are much more efficient than an electric range because you are directly heating the wort and not the actual kettle. they are a bit more work...

"yeast can't live in a high pressure environment" ?

I have read that most yeast cant survive past 30psi. So there is some truth to not surviving in a "high pressure environment" but i believe that you would need to get it well past what a normal beer bottle can handle

    Quick Power Cord Question

you can pretty easily turn a 240v line into 2 120v lines (assuming there is a neutral on the 240 line) just wire one hot (black) along with the neutral and ground to each 120 line. that is pretty easy and you would not need a "box" per-say, you could just do it with wire nuts any more than 2...
