Definitive answer to safety of #5 pp buckets?

Thanks, I might do this. On the other hand so many people swear by just using a towel... Towel seems easier, but I am sure there are many advantages to using a regular air lock.

Definitive answer to safety of #5 pp buckets?

Not exactly sure. this will be my first batch. Here is the recipe and the guy to ask : https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f32/caramel-apple-hard-cider-292770/ Thanks for your advice. I am pretty sure they stored frosting in it, but I am not sure if it had a layer of plastic between the bucket and...

Definitive answer to safety of #5 pp buckets?

I see tons of info on the safety of 1 and 2, but nothing about fermenting in a # 5. I asked this over in the wine forums and they didn't know either. QUESTION 1: Okay I know I am really beating the **** out of a dead horse here, but I just went to acme and picked up some 5 gallon food storage...

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

Thanks for your help Fizzycist. I guess I just need to hunt down the chemists/Material scientists on the forums :). With all the recommendations to get buckets from your bakery, I find it hard to believe that there are no definitive answers anywhere online for each type of plastic (for...

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

Thanks for your input. I was really hoping I could get some scientific information telling me no plastics would leech into the drink during fermentation with #5 pp and that it was totally safe. I guess this isn't the place to ask about scientific safety info on plastics:P Thanks.

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

Okay thanks. So the only problem is the oxygen permeability? So it should be fine for a primary. I was just worried about poisons leeching into my alcohol. This shouldn't be an issue right? Totally safe :)? Others had confirmed 1 and 2 to be okay, but I honestly can't find any information on...

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

Got a few buckets from the local bakery, but most are #5 pp. I made a thread about it. I am sure it is fine for a bottling bucket, but can I use it to ferment?

    Safety of acme buckets?(#5 plastic)

If everyone is unsure I might repost in the beer forum to see if they have any input. It's hard to believe that their is not a definitive answer on this, but I guess most people must just buy fermenting buckets at their HBS not the bakery.

    Safety of acme buckets?(#5 plastic)

Thanks. I have already read articles that are essentially the exact same thing as that. I understand that #5 is okay for storing food, my issue is fermenting. Will the plastic leech into the alcohol during long periods of fermentation? As many suggested the buckets from my bakery were free...

    Safety of acme buckets?(#5 plastic)

QUESTION 1: Okay I know I am really beating the **** out of a dead horse here, but I just went to acme and picked up some 5 gallon food storage buckets. On the bottom in the recyling symbo it says 5 and underneath that is PP. From what some people say only 1 and 2 are safe, but on different...

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

Haha. I knew I forgot something :). I think I will just buy some caps and a bottling wand. I will probably just use some old sam adams bottles if that would be okay. Anything else you would suggest? Also you recommended a bottling bucket... Can I just do that with my siphon or will that be a...

Buying equipment for first batch of cider. Suggestions?

I would like to begin making my first batch of upstate mike's cider https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f32/caramel-apple-hard-cider-292770/. I also like making little batches of hobo wine from store bought juices (fermented within the store bought jug). Here is my tentative list: 5104D 6.5...

Good Cider Recipe for a beginner?

Thanks and congrats on the competition :rockin: One more quick question you recommend stove top pasteurizing. Why is this better than cold crashing? Cold crashing seems so much easier, but some people said they can't give it away as gifts if they cold crashed it. Does that mean cold crashing...

Good Cider Recipe for a beginner?

That looks like what I am looking for :). How many months until it tastes decent? Thanks. Edit: Also, do you think I could do part one in a 6 gallon fermenting bucket and then just siphon that into a 6 gallon carboy? Thanks.

Good Cider Recipe for a beginner?

Okay I have been reading through the forums and most of the recipes I have found are for dry ciders. I would prefer to have a sweet cider as my final product. I just want something sweet and tasty with a decent alcohol concentration (And maybe something that is edible after a few months :) ). I...

Unlimited apples, but no press or juicer :(

Yah I see both sides of it. When I have a little more cash and some more time (maybe next summer), I might invest in building one. For now the plethora of local of local farmers should be good enough to get me started on my first real batch. Also when you built yours did you decide if there...
