    Initial Gear Purchase

Looks good to me. You have everything I have. I would suggest another vessel though, if not for a secondary (personal choice), then for a second batch to start your pipeline!

    Fruit in secondary

any idea if the fruit could grow mold? There seems to be a layer of the strawberry, then a white layer about a half cm thick, then beer, then a small layer of trub. Could be normal, but the white layer really throws me.

    Extract Hop Slam Clone- critiques

Hey guys, I'm trying to gather a recipe for Bell's Hop Slam, and I've found the following 2. One main question is whether or not I can substitute for the malt? The first recipe calls for Alexander, which appears to be canned LME. Is there a different malt I can use that isn't canned...

    Fruit in secondary

I think you are right, and am going forward regardless, but i dont think im as worried about the time (your referencing the lagering) as i am the three times racked, and still expecting fermentation

    Fruit in secondary

What if you are racking to a third vessel, will there still be enough yeast to eat the fruit sugars? I ask because I am doing an experiment where I am bottling 4/5 gallons and racking 1/5 gallons to my 1 gallon jug, on top of some raspberries. I'm assuming this is still the same situation...

anyone use a strainer for wort to fermenter??

Even if the recipe has spice packets and such?

anyone use a strainer for wort to fermenter??

Does anyone pour there wort from the pot, through a strainer (sanitized thoroughly) and into the fermenting bucket/carboy? I did it to limit sediment, and hope for clearer beer later. Is that accurate logic? Will it hinder the flavor?

Fruit in beer, 4 gallons in 5 gallon carboy

Thanks, pretty sure thats what ill do. Add some raspberries. You think 3 levels of fermentation will aerate too much?

Fruit in beer, 4 gallons in 5 gallon carboy

OK, so I have 2 questions. I'm about to start the 4th week of fermentation (well, 2 primary, 1 secondary, I know its not really FERMENTATION anymore:p), and I wanted to try an experiment. The 5 gallons of Kolsch are currently in a 5 gallon carboy, and I have a spare 1 gallon glass carboy...

    Painted Bottle Caps

Wow, thanks guys. Bottlemark is way cheaper than I would've thought. I just didn't want the "BB" ones that come with my first Brewer's best kit. Kind of generic.

    Painted Bottle Caps

Has anyone ever tried painting their bottle caps to match the bottle/label? For instance maybe covering the bottle (after bottling, so the inside/sanitation wouldn't be compromised), and spray painting the beer cap?

    cider brewing kit??

Just make sure you know that most kits will not include a pot to brew your wort in. This is actually almost as big an expense as the kit itself. Although I believe you can find cheaper ones on Amazon. Shoot for a stainless steel pot, and I believe 16 quarts or 4 gallons is the smallest for a...

    Cider vs. Beer (brewing diffs)

Thanks for the response, I actually made wine prior to my foray into homebrewing, but that fundamental difference makes sense. Thanks a lot.

    Cider vs. Beer (brewing diffs)

What is the difference between brewing cider and brewing beer? Do you need any extra equipment, or is it just different methods and original materials? Sorry for such a general question

    Hydrometer readings, recycle?

When taking a hydrometer reading, is it customary to dump the beer back into the bucket/carboy (providing the thief, jar, hydrometer are thoroughly sanitized, of course)? I'm just worried that if I'm taking hydrometer readings all of the time, and dumping, I'll lose too much beer.

Fermenting a kolsch right now and I have a couple questions.

I actually just racked my second brew, a Kolsch, to the secondary, after being in the primary for 15 days at about 65-70 degrees (ambient, haven't put a therm on the carboy or checked inside the carboy). I now have it in my basement (ambient 65) next to a freezer (hoping the freezer cools the...
