All grain - best route for cheap equipment

I'm still not sure I fully understand the concept of a false bottom. I use a mashing bag for my grains and I have not encountered a problem yet with ths set-up.

time in 2nd then to Keg

I actually meant just to leave the beer for three weeks before kegging. It is all down to personal reference I suppose. If I had a glass carboy I would be inclied to use it for this purpose. Since I dont, i cannot be bothered with the extra transfer for 'cosmetic' appeal.

time in 2nd then to Keg

From what I understand it is suggested to leave the beer in the primary fermenter for 3 weeks instead of the 1 week directed on the back of the "kits". Well that is what I will be doing from now on anyho

    Sheer Confusion

What happens is you buy a kit of say Coopers(R) and they tell you to add 1kg of glucose (dextrose). You can add the tin of unhopped malt extract instead if you want.

    my beer tastes bitter

What recipe did you follow? I bet you it is because you used too much hops. It happened to me and it aint pretty. Add some water to it if it is barely tolerable.

    Injured Thumb Wheat Ale

Dont worry, my fermenting bin does not have an air lock, so naturally the lid pops off to release gaseous CO2. Not ideal, but not something to get worried about

Corny kegs on e-bay for $18.00

Well it is still a bargin at any rate. Not that it has anything to do with any business of mine but still.

    What NOT to do...

I find it too much effort to cap beer bottles (not that I have ever tried) Im more talking about the sanitization process than just filling up an empty bottle with beer. It is alot of effort for me to bottle a 5 gallon wine kit. I used to bottle my beer in 2 litre coke bottles but find the idea...

Ice, I know I know, But read

If you use alcohol you can get the pre-immersion temperature down to -18C I believe.

    Champagne Bottles

What I mean is that when I was brewing from kits I got a CRYSTAL CLEAR result everytime. This is exactly what I am shooting for. The problem is that the smell was not all aromatic and hoppy but smelt a bit akin to evaporated milk. The taste was fine though so you could say that going to all...

    Champagne Bottles

I'm thinking of using some of these that are in peoples recycle bins where I live so that I can crack on with the new batch. Since I am all grain brewer it takes nature longer to condition my beer than if I buy tins of premium grade malt extract. Two bottles of Grolsch flip-top sell for £3 for...

    Hi from England

Well Sir, I live in your area roughly. I actually buy my stuff from a store in Keynsham if it is not over the internet. I am not really established in this area though so and it could only be a matter of months before I will be on the move again.

Ice, I know I know, But read

The only wee concern I have is that if I have a 5 gallon fermenter when I get greedy with the water-fill level there is every chance that my batch is gon' boil over in a vigorus fermentation. There is a guy in another post looking to cut corners financially to break through into allgrain brewing.

I suspect you may have an infection going on.

All grain - best route for cheap equipment

I followed the instructions on the top of this website page: http://www.art-of-brewing.co.uk/acatalog/intro.html In the e-book by JP he states that the rotating sparge arm is not really needed. So if you were looking to cut back on costs you could omit this. I have one already though and think...

Ice, I know I know, But read

That is def a sweet idea. I already have a copper piping coiler but this is still educational to say the least. Just by way of curiosity, how many kg's of ice are required to bring down the temp of a 5 gal batch. My local store sells 2 kg bags

    Grain Mill

I actually thought about grinding the malted barley grains by hand. You know like one of those old fashioned pencil sharpners - only larger. I am not really gonna want to buy one of these anytime soon, I was merely curious and wanted to know what the deal is. Like alot of stuff just because I...

    Time and storage an bottles

2 weeks bare minimum. I am certainly no expert though but I can sympathize with your urge to sample your new batch.

    Clear vs Cloudy Beer

Obviously the clarity of the beer improves with time. With the tins my primary fermentation would last one week and then i'd keg it. If I start allowing my AG batches 3 weeks (like what it says in the e-book) before carbonating ~ another 2-3 weeks. Surely this increases the chances of getting...

    Anybody Grow Hops?

It is something that is worth considering.
