Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

Do you have to do any special maintenance at the end/beginning of the year when you grow in buckets? Do they produce the same as if they were planted in the ground? Do they have the same lifespan?

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

Pretty psyched. All 5 of my rhizomes have sprouted. Now I just hope the deer don't discover them.

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

Yeah, I've got some old rebar lying around that I might use if it comes to that. I was trying to work these in along with my honey-do list, that's why I took shortcuts.. The rhizomes had been sitting in the fridge for almost a month.

Wishful thinking? Hopes and shattered dreams? I dunno, I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

It's my first year growing hops, and rather than start yet another newbie thread I'll just share here. Here is a link to an album of what I did. I ordered 5 rhizomes this year - 2 Goldings and 1 each of Nugget, Fuggles and Cascade. I'm currently unemployed and cheap so I tried to...

So, yeah, BOIL the wort, THEN can it

Thanks for the quick reply Yooper. I have been thinking about this for awhile, it would be great to make a big batch of wort and then make individual starter sized jars from it. My mom was visiting over the holidays and I mentioned her old canner that I remembered from my youth. She said I...

So, yeah, BOIL the wort, THEN can it

Let's pretend that I'm your standard, straight, American male. How do I go about learning to pressure can wort (or anything else for that matter, I suppose)? Also, aside from the actual pressure canner and jars and what-not, what else do I need? Am I going to kill myself or send shrapnel...

How do you ensure a keg is sealed?

Like JonK said, you gotta have pressure to seal. I'll hit it with 30lbs of CO2 real quick and then spritz all the seals with some StarSan from a squirt bottle and look for bubbles. A friend of mine turns the keg upside down on top of some paper towels and lets them sit like that for a...

    Adding extract to a kit

Sounds great. I'll run to the LHBS at lunch today and grab 1/2 ounce of Northern Brewer or similar. Thanks!

    Adding extract to a kit

Howdy A couple of days ago I was at my LHBS to pick up some extract for my wife (she is using it for the Thanksgiving turkey). The smallest amount they sold was the 3.3 pound cans, so I picked up a can of Muntun's Amber LME. While I was there I also picked up a Brewer's Best Robust Porter...

    Fermentation value in Krausen?

I'm curious about this too. I had to replace an airlock after a blow out with a blow off tube and I noticed a bunch of yeast in my sanitized water. I thought about washing it, but then just dumped it down the drain. Should (or could) that yeast be saved? It would seem like the yeast that...

Making a hot liquor tank out of this Coleman cooler

It should just unscrew. I have a similar one and what I did was hold the base of the flap on the outside while turning the inside bit with my fingers. It looks like their may be a bit of gunk in there and that might have caused it to stick a bit. Perhaps run some cleaner and hot water around...

The myth of the <$50 corny keg

This probably doesn't help, but I've picked up (my first) 9 in the past week for $100. The first 5 I bought from someone getting out of the hobby and the other 4 were given to me by a friend that works at a soda distributor. However, I know some folks are picky and 6 of the 9 are pin lock...

    Sanke keg adapters

The standard Sankey tap will fit domestic Sankey kegs, be they 1/2 barrel 1/4 barrel or sixtel. If you want to use a European Sankey keg then you will need a European Sankey tap. Check here

Going about things backwards, at least from a ball lock/pin lock perspective.

PantherCity, I appreciate your reasoning, and I agree, cheaper is better.

Going about things backwards, at least from a ball lock/pin lock perspective.

My understanding is that the conversion just requires changing the posts. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Further, if I don't dispose of the ball lock posts then no harm, no foul. Right? I'm not talking about drilling holes in them or anything, I still want them to hold beer at pressure...

Going about things backwards, at least from a ball lock/pin lock perspective.

Howdy y'all, I recently came in to the possession of 5 corny kegs. Three of them are ball lock and the other two are pin lock, they also came with the hardware to convert the pin locks to ball lock. "Awesome", you say, "Just convert them so you only have one style." Not so fast. I will be...

    Hello! Another from VA here.

I too am a newb from Roanoke. Do you know about the Star City Brewers Guild? They are a local hombrew club. I have not been to any of the meetings myself, but I plan to once I get a few brew under my belt.
