Homemade PBW in 5 Gallon Bucket

    Great! Thanks.

    OxyClean Free - Residue

A cold water rinse after the hot water rinse may help. That's what I do when cleaning bottles and haven't noticed any residue. My theory is that the cold water does a better job of getting the last bit of soap off.

Homemade PBW in 5 Gallon Bucket

I was thinking about making some homemade PBW and storing it in a 5 gallon bucket with a gamma lid. I was wondering how many pounds will fit? I was planning on using Sodium Percarbonate and Sodium Metasilicate from Amazon rather than Oxyclean and TSP/90. I've read through the big thread on how...

    RIMS Explosion Risk

The warning I was referring to is in the description on Brew Hardware referring to not putting a valve downstream of the tube. I came across the word explosion a few other places when I googled RIMS brewing but now realize those are older sources.

    RIMS Explosion Risk

That makes sense. I was thinking the explosion would be due to boiling wort but as long as the steam can escape there wouldn't be a build up of pressure. The flow switch does look like good safety measure also.

    RIMS Explosion Risk

I'm researching RIMS brewing and think that is the direction I want to go since I already have a pump. I've got plenty of experience with single infusion (although only 1 gallon batches) but no experience with recirculating mash. The thing that has me concerned is all the warnings I'm seeing...

    Cold Crash Substitute?

I don't keg yet so take this with a grain of salt. Since you aren't leaving the yeast behind in the fermenter then would it end up in the keg. Without the Clear Beer float the first pint or so would be cloudy. It seems to me that with the float your last pint or so would be cloudy unless it...

Fizz Drops vs. Priming sugar- Any Difference?

I've never used fizz drop but have read a lot of people saying they don't like them. I use table sugar. For my one gallon batches I made a bottling bucket using a 5 quart plastic bucket from Lowes and a bottling spigot. I also had a spare racking cane so I cut the curved end off and used a #2...

quick question for the fastRack owners

I'm not familiar with those bottles but I do have a Tank 7 bottle which is 750 ml, although it's a cork type. It definitely doesn't fit in the beer version of the FastRack if that helps give you an answer.

Fermenting w/ blow-off tube first vs airlock immediately

I'd recommend a blow off tube for the first few days with those 1 gallon jugs. According to my notes I had 10 blow offs in 40 batches in gallon jugs, a few of them were pretty violent, loosing more than a bottle worth.

Gas Rig: Direct Fire RIMS vs RIMS tube

I'm working on a similar decision (insulated tun vs RIMS, TOP is out of my budget) although I'm going the 3 vessel single tier route. Some conclusions I've come to: 1. It's hard to beat an insulated tun with single infusion for simplicity but you are looking at BIAB so it would be less...

    Cold crash?

I've never cold crashed so I can't answer that but unless you have a specific reason (like adding fruit, etc) I wouldn't transfer to secondary. It'll be fine in primary that long.

    Refreshing Yeast Bank

Thanks everyone. I don't anticipate any strain getting to a year between uses so it looks like I'm best off just allowing time for stepping up for the older stuff.

    Refreshing Yeast Bank

I'm going to start using liquid yeast this year and want to overbuild starters for future use. I'm trying to decide how many strains I'd like to keep. Fridge space is not a problem so the limiting factor is keeping viability at a decent level. I've read about slanting and freezing yeast and I...

    looking for book suggestions

I'd recommend Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels. I don't know about LODO but if you haven't seen it already there is a subforum in the All Grain section about it.

I finally brewed and some things I learned..

I started with the same kit. I second the ideas about the wort chiller and bottling bucket. Just make sure the chiller coils fit since many of the chillers on the market are sized for larger pots. For the bottling bucket I recommend a 5 quart bucket (I got mine from Lowes in the paint section)...
